Tennis News - Federer & Fish make it to Cincinnati Final
American Andy Roddick has crashed out of the Cincinnati Masters Tennis tournament as his compatriot Mardy Fish recorded a stunning win to set-up a final clash with Swiss maestro Roger Federer.
Roger Federer ranked number two in the world after disposing off Novak Djokovic from the slot, scored a comfortable win over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.
The score-line was 6-4 6-3 in the match played on Saturday helping him set up an intriguing finale to the event.
Fish was elated with his special performance over his compatriot making a stunning comeback after being a set down in the match to record a 4-6 7-6 6-1 victory which sees him through to his third Masters series final.
"You always want to beat the best and Roger (Federer) certainly is the greatest ever so it'd be nice to play him. This is one of my favourite stops of the year and I'm thrilled to be playing on Sunday," claimed Fish after recording his semi-final win over Roddick.
Federer the man with the most grand slam wins in the history of the game has had an easy route to the last four.
He started off the tournament with a bye, followed by retirement of his opponent in the second round and a walkover in third, which ensured that he reached the last eight with out being pushed to the distance.
Despite the lack of action the greatest player of all time who is also the defending champion here will start the final as the overwhelming favourite for the title.
The Swiss champion has been serving outstandingly in the event thus far winning as many as 90 percent of his first service points.
Fish has been equally prolific with his serves in the tournament and the final is set to be a clash of two players on top of their serves.
In his pre final against Roddick, Fish faced the prospect of a defeat as the two times Wimbledon finalist served for the match at 5-3 up in the second set.
From the brink of defeat Fish made a stunning comeback to upset Roddick with a vintage display.
After winning the first set the big-serving Roddick succeeded in putting himself in a formidable position in the match by taking a 5-2 lead in the second, the match was interrupted with Fish serving to stay in the match as the havens opened.
However the stoppage was barely for 10 minutes yet it was enough to put off Roddick who somehow lost his touch and subsequently the grip on the match.
Fish then played some breadth taking tennis in the second set pushing the set to a tiebreak, which he won in style.
Roddick was a shadow of the player who was on the top in the first half of the match as he allowed his emotions to take over and hence there was only one winner in the third set as his opponent cruised to a 6-1 victory.
Meanwhile Federer stated after his semi-final that Fish would be a really tough opponent for him in the final "He already showed signs back in Miami, I think, when he beat Murray, and he plays very offensively, even though today he relied a bit more on his defence," said Federer on Fish. "I always thought he had a wonderful game, and thought he was going to have a much better career. So, it's nice to seeing him turn it up a bit."
