Tennis News: Juan Martin Del Potro likely to miss French Open
Worries for Argentine tennis fans as world number 31, Juan Martin Del Potro suffers a hip injury, forcing a probable sideline for the Argentine from the Roland Garros. Del Potro suffered a severe injury last week before he was
to compete against the world number one Rafael Nadal in the third round clash of Mutua Madrid Open.
The Argentine was in an excellent form in Madrid and was scheduled to encounter Nadal for a berth in the quarter-final of the tournament but his injury forced him to forfeit from the contest. His medical staff revealed that he
had suffered an 8mm tear in his left hip muscle, which might restrict him from taking part in the all-prestigious Grand Slam event, the French Open.
Del Potro’s PR agency released a statement on his behalf on Tuesday saying that, “It is still unknown how long it will take for Del Potro to come back to the tour but he will most likely not make it to play the second Grand Slam
of the season, Roland Garros.”
The Argentine made a comeback in the pro tennis arena toward the end of 2010, after a long layoff from the game due to his persistent wrist injuries. His absence from the tennis courts pushed him down to the 485th spot
in world rankings but the determined Argentine forced his way to the 31st place with his brilliant skills. His form in the running ATP season has been very impressive, as he has already bagged two championship titles till now. Del Potro broke into
the winners’ circle this year when he defeated Janko Tipsarevic at the Delray Beach International.
His brilliant performances continued in the Estoril Open, where he defeated the world number 18, Fernando Verdasco in the final to bag his second title of the year. Besides Nadal, Del Potro is the other player who is yet to be
defeated on clay courts since Roland Garros last year. He runs a seven-match winning streak on clay surface and was considered as of the strong contenders for the French Open. His injury might restrict him from becoming a part of the field at the Roland Garros,
which is certainly heartbreaking for the Argentine tennis lovers. Moreover, to the dismay of tennis fans, Del Potro’s fellow compatriot, David Nalbandian, has also withdrawn from the Roland Garros campaign, after catching a virus.
Although it is not certain as to how quickly Del Potro will recover from his hip injury, but it will surely be a bad news if the Argentine misses out from the upcoming Grand Slam tournament.
