Tennis News: Liezel Huber's and Bob Bryan's stunning performance at U.S. Open
The top seeded Americans Liezel Huber and Bob Bryan performed spectacularly throughout U.S. Open and that culminated in them winning their second Grand Slam title in mixed doubles last Thursday. They defeated Kveta Peschke
of the Czech Republic and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of
Pakistan by 6-4, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
While accepting the trophy, Bob Bryan stated that his charitable foundation which he runs with his doubles partner and twin brother Mike Bryan, has been donating money to the Pakistan flood relief efforts.
According to Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, Bob Bryan and his teammate Liezel Huber are well loved in the locker rooms.
Aisam’s Pakistan has been under duress for the past couple of months, after heavy monsoon rains instigated floods that have created the country’s worst natural disaster. More than 17 millions are
affected by the floods, with many of them homeless and without livelihoods.
"Every little bit helps," Qureshi said. "I've been trying to send some good news back home from here for two weeks. It's a really, really kind gesture. I owe them."
More tellingly, Qureshi joked that he could pay the Bryan Brothers back by giving them the men’s double title, which is unfortunately what ultimately transpired the next day.
Bryan and Liezel have spent more than 14 years of their lives in the world of tennis. Tennis is like a religion to them and U.S. Open 2010 is a highlight in their career.
Huber and Bryan also won the last year’s French Open. Huber was born in
South Africa, and became an America citizen in 2007.
Huber and Russia’s Nadia Petrova were in the women’s doubles semifinals at U.S. Open 2010.
Huber has improved her game a lot; she is essentially a baseline player. Her game is built around taking immediate control of rallies with a strong and reliable serve and powerful ground strokes from both her forehand and
backhand swings.
Although her forehand is among the most powerful in the women’s game, her double handed backhand is considered to be one of the best in Women’s Tennis Association tour. Huber could hit a winning backhand shot, from any position
on the court, down the line or cross court.
In fact both the players, Huber and Bryan are professionals and played some of their careers’ best shots throughout the tournament. They both proved to the best mixed doubles team in U.S. Open and lived up to the expectations
of their fans and nation.
The Bryan Brothers are popular for their high-flying chest-bumping celebrations but that doesn’t go well for mixed doubles, as Huber joked that Bob Bryan should try chest-bumping his girlfriend instead of her. Both players
however seemed ecstatic at winning the mixed doubles crown and hope to do even better in upcoming tournaments.
