Tennis News: Novak Djokovic eyes world number one spot in rankings
Reigning world number two, Novak Djokovic of Serbia has expressed his views that his prime objective is to become the top ranked player in world ratings. 23-year-old Serb reflected his thoughts on Tuesday, before starting up his
Internazionali BNL d’Italia campaign in Rome, Italy and told his fans that his magnificent form in this season is taking him closer to the top spot in world rankings.
“My ambition or goal is to be No. 1 and my dream is to win Wimbledon so these are two things that I always wanted to do,” Djokovic told to the press reporters. “The No. 1 ranking is obviously getting closer to me but it still takes
a lot of work to get there and if I do get there in a couple of weeks or months or a couple of years it does not matter. I will try to keep working to get to this position.”
Djokovic is currently running his best form ever and is still unbeaten this year. The second ranked Serb is holding the third longest match-winning streak in the history of the game, as he has won 32 matches consecutively during
this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season. He has already won six championship titles this season, including the all-prestigious Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open at the beginning of the year.
The second ranked Serb can get to the top of the South African Airways ATP Rankings if he wins the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tournament in Rome and the two times defending champion, the world number one, Rafael Nadal falls before
the semi-finals. Winning the ATP World Tour 1000 title at Rome will give sufficient ranking points to Djokovic to topple over Nadal from the top spot. The Serb has already defeated Nadal in the finals of three ATP tournaments this year, which include a title
victory last Sunday at the Mutua Madrid Open.
If Nadal hold his number one position in world rankings by winning the tournament in Rome, Djokovic will still have another golden opportunity to topple the Spaniard at the French Open. Nadal will be requiring 2000 ranking points
at the Roland Garros if he is to defend his top spot, while Djokovic will need just 360 points, which he can bag by making a quarter-final appearance.
With the ballistic form the Serb is currently running, it looks quite obvious that Djokovic will go on to claim the world number one spot very soon.
