Tennis Pan Pacific 2010: Elena Dementieva to meet Caroline Wozniacki in the title battle
In the second semi-final round of the Pan Pacific Open Women’s competition, the seventh seed Elena Dementieva triumphed against her fifth seeded foe, Francesca Schiavone to reach the final in a total of two sets on Friday. Elena won only two of the first
ten points of the clash, however, immediately found her form and rhythm to claim a 6-4, 7-5 victory in Tokyo.
Elena, as a result of this victory, will meet the world number two Caroline Wozniacki in the title battle of the 2010 Pan Pacific. Caroline and Elena are tied in their head-to-head encounter at 3-3. The Dane triumphed in their only this season’s match, however
that was as close as it can get, with Elena leading 5-3 in the third set before Caroline brushed her aside in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Earlier on Friday, Wozniacki in the first semi-final match of the Pan Pacific got the better of Victoria Azarenka in three sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4. The clash concluded in a time period of two hours and fifty one minutes in Tokyo.
The 20-year-old Caroline, who is seeded number one to win the title, led the eight seed Victoria 5-0 in the third set when she caught fire, winning four consecutive games and sixteen of nineteen points in that stretch to end at 5-4. Caroline served the battle
out at love.
"I know she is a fighter and never gives up. At 5-0 she didn't have anything to lose so she just started going for her shots, and they were going in for her. At 5-4 I stepped it up a little bit, got some big first serves in and was able to close it out.
We were both fighting and got better as the match went on,” said the world number two Wozniacki.
Caroline improved to 23-2 since the All England Club, the only defeat coming to Marion Bartoli in the round three of Cincinnati and to the Russian tennis star Vera Zvonareva in the semis of the United States Open. She has captured three crowns in that stretch
in New Haven, Copenhagen and Montreal.
"I have had a great run the last couple of months. I am really happy to be in the final. I am feeling confident, but I know there is a very tough opponent I will have to face tomorrow,” she added.
