Tennis Pan Pacific Women’s tennis tournament: Vera Zvonareva defeats Sara Errani
The second seed Russian, Vera Zvonareva continued her good form to defeat Sara Errani from Italy for a spot in the third round of the Pan Pacific Women’s tennis tournament on Tuesday.
The Russian, who achieved her career high ranking of world number four after ending as finalist at the United States Open tennis tournament this season in New York, struggled to hold her serve, losing a total of three games and was required to repeat deuces
on seven occasions before serving out for a two-setter victory on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3.
Elena Dementieva, a seventh seed Russian who is also a gold medallist at the Olympics Games back in 2008, claimed a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazakhstan, whereas the eight seed Victoria Azarenka managed to surpass her Czech
tennis foe, Lucie Safarova 6-1, 6-3.
Vera while commenting on Sara’s form and game after her victory said that she entered the court with full awareness about Sara’s potential and capability, and thus managed to beat her successfully in the end.
"I knew Sara is a very tough opponent, so I had to concentrate. It's the first match after a couple of weeks off, so of course it was difficult to play your best tennis. I was playing indoors (with the roof closed due to rain) for the first time since last
year's Kremlin Cup. It was a year ago, so it was quite different conditions," said Zvonareva.
The Russian was of the view that she tried her level best in Today’s second round match of the Pan Pacific Women’s Tennis competition, and although it was not a clean sweep still she was extremely glad with her performance and overall game.
Vera said that she was just trying my best and had her ups and downs. However, she was still happy with the way she handled the situation and won the match.
In some other action, Victoria from Belarus who was given an opening round bye with Vera and Dementieva, also won her second round match against Safarova, missing only four games in her two-setter win on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-3.
It marked a powerful comeback for Azarenka, who only few weeks earlier had kneeled over in the blistering heat during the United States Open in New York and was pushed off court in a wheelchair.
In the third round, Azarenka is slated to meet either Ana Ivanovic or Marion Bartoli.
