Question:

Tennis Rules/Violations?

I am wondering, what are the consequences for violations in high school tennis. I've heard that violations in tennis are bad sportsmanship such as throwing your racket, smashing your racket on the ground, and swearing. I'm just wondering, is the swearing part considered a violation if the other player curses at me only or does it count if he curses at the audience as well? Also, what are the consequences for each of these violations. I've heard that if you do any of those things once, the player gets a warning. If he does any of those three again he loses the match, gets disqualified, and is disqualified from the next match he has to play. So is this all true?

  1. Swearing at yourself is Fine

  2. Yes, swearing is a violation in high school tennis, but a coach has to witness it in order to issue a warning.  As a player, you can't call out things like that.  All you can do is tell your coach if it's a problem, and have him/her watch for it.

But the penalty system is a little more forgiving than what you have mentioned.  First violation is a warning.  Second is a point for the other team.  Third is a game.  Fourth is either a set or the match (never seen it get this far before).  If fourth is a set, then fifth is match.  But you are allowed to play the next game (unless your own coach penalizes you for your conduct after the match).

I've actually played in a match where the opponents got up to the third violation.  The guy had been swearing the whole match, and finally one of the coaches saw it and gave the warning.  Later in the match, he was still swearing, so we got a point.  A few points later, he threw his racquet into the net, giving us a free game.

  3. lol. that's never happened to my team, or the opposing teams here. so i wouldn't know anything
