Tennis Special Edition: A recap of Gael Monfils performance this year
Born on September 1, 1986 in the city of Paris, Gael Monfils is a professional tennis player from France. The 24-year-old Monfils is currently the second highest ranked tennis player from France and is placed at number fifteen by the Association of tennis
professionals. He has so far grabbed two ATP singles crowns, the first one back at Sopot in 2005, while the second one came at Metz during the end of last year. Monfils was also a finalist at the Paris Masters tennis competition back in 2009, and a semi-finalist
at the clay court French Open two years ago, back in 2008.
As far as his performance this season is concerned, the French tennis player started the year by competing at the Brisbane International tennis competition, as his first tournament of 2010. Seeded third to win the title, Monfils knocked down his American
tennis opponent, Taylor Dent in the opening round of the match. The final match score was 6–7 7–6 6–2. He got the better of Florent Serra and James Blake before advancing into the semis, where the Frenchman was finally ousted by his Czech tennis foe, Radek
Stepanek in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6–2 6–1.
At the 2010 Australian Open tennis tournament, the right-handed Gaels thrashed down Matthew Ebden in the first round match and Antonio Veic from Croatia in the next, triumphing 6–4 6–4 6–4 in both clashes. In the round of thirty two, the French player was
defeated by John Isner in a total of four sets. The final match score was 6–1 4–6 7–6(4) 7–6(5).
Seeded one at the 2010 SA Tennis Open competition, the Trelex resident did well to reach the semi final round where he was brushed aside by Feliciano Lopez in a three setter clash. The final match score was 3–6 6–1 7–6(1). He next played at the 2010 ABN
AMRO World Tennis competition, held in Rotterdam, where Monfils was dismissed in the quarters at the hands of the Mikhail Youzhny. The final match score was 5–7 6–2 6–3.
At the clay court French Open tennis championship, the world number fifteen managed to make his way into the quarters in Roland Garros. Fabio Fognini, however, managed to upset the French tennis ace in a total of five sets in a quarter clash that was contested
at night. The final match score was 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and 9-7.
Beginning his grass-court season, Gaels lost in the second round of the 2010 AEGON Championship at the hands of Rainer Schuttler in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 6-3, (4)6-7, 6-2.
Playing at the grass court Grand Slam tournament on the very first occasion since 2007, the French tennis player triumphed in his opening match in straight sets versus Leonardo Mayer in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-1 7-6(9) 6-2. He,
however, couldn’t surpass the third round, as the right-hander was eliminated by Lleyton Hewitt in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-3 7-6(9) 6-4. Wimbledon is the only major competition where Gaels is yet to pass round three.
The 1.93 meters tall Gaels next contested at the United States Open tennis tournament, where he got the better of Robert Kendrick in the opening round match. The final match score was 3-6 6-3 6-4 (5)6-7 6-4. In the next round, the French defeated Igor Andreev
in straight sets with a final match score of 6-3 6-4 and 6-3. He progressed to the fourth round by ousting Janko Tipsarevic in a total of four sets. The final match score was 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 6-2 6-4. Monfils next got past his compatriot tennis foe, Richard Gasquet
in a total of three sets before falling down by Novak Djokovic in the quarters in New York. The final match score was 7-6(2) 6-1 6-2.
