Tennis Special Edition: a look at Alona Volodymyrivna Bondarenkos performances this year
Born on 13 August 1984 in the city of Kryvyi Rih, Alona Volodymyrivna Bondarenko is a professional tennis player from Ukraine. Her younger sister, Kateryna Bondarenko is also known for playing tennis. The Ukrainian was previously teamed up with her elder sister, Valeria for doubles matches. The right-handed Alona is currently ranked number thirty one in the world by the Women tennis professionals in singles and number thirty nine in doubles on the tour.
The 26-year-old Ukrainian achieved her career high ranking of world number nineteen back in 2008 during the month of April. Alona has captured the Australian Open doubles trophy along with her sister, Kateryna back in 2008, after getting the better of Shahar Pe'er and Victoria Azarenka in the finals.
As far as her performances this season are concerned, the 1.68 meters tall Alona contested at the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International tennis tournament, as her first competition of the season. She did well to make her way into the final of the event and toppled Shahar Pe'er in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2 6-4. She reached the title battle after defeating Sybille Bammer, Alize Cornet, Zheng Jie as well as the top-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues. The title came as her first one after a period of three complete years.
At the Australian Open tennis championship, the Ukrainian tennis ace was seeded number thirty one to win the title. She couldn’t past the fourth round, and was knocked down by Jie Zheng in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 6-7, 4-6. Alona, while reaching the round four, thrashed out Jelena Jankovic in the third round of the competition.
Alona next played at the 2010 Dubai Tennis tournament, where she couldn’t pass the first round. At the 2010 BNP Paribas Open as well as the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open tennis competition, the Ukrainian was knocked out in the second round on both occasions.
The world number thirty one ended losing her streak at the 2010 Family Circle Cup, where she won her first round match in a total of two sets against Julie Ditty. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2. She next got the better of Bethanie Mattek-Sands in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Alona then claimed the greatest victory of her career by brushing aside the second-ranked tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 6-2, 6-3. The Ukrainian, however, couldn’t continue her winning form in the next round and was fallen down by the thirteen-seeded tennis foe, Li Na in straight sets.
The 26-year-old next played at the 2010 Polsat Warsaw Open, where she did well to reach the quarterfinal round of the competition. In the quarters, Alona was upset by Greta Arn in a total of three sets. The final match score was 5-7 6-4 6-4.
At the French Open 2010, she managed to reach the third round on the very first occasion in her career. However she was defeated by the fourth seeded, Jelena Jankovic in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4 7-6(3). She then faced early defeats in the opening rounds of 2010 Rogers Cup, 2010 Mercury Insurance Open, 2010 Pilot Pen Tennis competitions, and the second round of Western and Southern Financial Group Masters and Women's Open event.
As far as the United States Open 2010 is concerned, the Ukrainian tennis player was brushed aside in the third round by the sixth-seeded, Francesca Schiavone in straight sets.
