Tennis Special Edition: a look at Polona Hercogs performance this year
Born on January 20, 1991 in the city of Maribor, Polona Hercog is a professional tennis player from Slovenia. The 19-year-old Polona achieved her career high rankings of world number forty three back on 13th September, 2010. The Slovenian has
so far captured a single WTA Tour doubles trophy and made her way into one singles final at the Abierto mexicano Telcel tennis tournament this season. Polona also has a good record on the International Tennis Federation circuit, grabbing a total of nine singles
and five doubles trophies. Teaming up with Jessica Moore, the right-handed Hercog won the clay court French Open as well as the Wimbledon junior doubles tournament back in 2008.
As far as her performance in the season 2010 is concerned, the professional tennis player from Slovenia, Polona Hercog played at the 2010 ASB Classic tennis tournament as her first competition of the year. The 19-year-old Polona, however, couldn’t even win
her opening round clash as she was hammered down at the hands of Shahar Pe'er from Israel in a total of two sets. The final match score was 5–7, 3–6.
The Maribor resident next competed at the 2010 Medibank International Sydney qualifications, where she was knocked down in the round two by Varvara Lepchenko in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 1–6, 3–6.
At the year’s opening Grand Slam event, the Australian Open tennis tournament, Hercog managed to oust Yuliana Fedak in her first round clash in Melbourne. The final match score was 6–4, 6–0. The Slovenian, however, in the next round was bundled out by Alona
Bondarenko in straight sets. The final match score was 4–6, 5–7.
After competing for the Fed Cup team of Slovenia, the 1.82 meters tall Polona captured the International Tennis Federation title in Colombia. However, she lost the opening round of Copa Sony Ericsson Colsanitas by Catalina Castano.
The world number forty three next participated at the 2010 Abierto Mexicano Telcel, which was held in Mexico. Hercog played extremely well to make her way into the very first WTA Tour singles final, and also captured her first WTA Tour doubles crown.  She
got the better of Rossana de los Rios in the first round in a total two sets. The final match score was 6–4, 6–1. In the second round, the Slovenian defeated Agnes Szavay in straight sets. Polona in the title battle met the former top-ranked tennis player,
Venus Williams from America who brushed her aside in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–2, 2–6, 3–6. Teaming up with Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova, the 19-year-old tennis sensation captured her first tour doubles trophy, as a result of defeating
the Italian duo, Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2–6, 6–1, [10–2].
At the 2010 BNP Paribas Open, Polona Hercog won her opening round match after brushing aside Ioana Raluca Olaru in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7–5, 6–4. In the next round, the Slovenian was, however, thrashed out by her eleventh seeded
tennis foe, Marion Bartoli in straight sets. The final match score was 6–4, 6–2.
Hercog managed to cause a major upset in the round two of the 2010 French Open tennis tournament by eliminating the world number 24, Lucie Safarova in straight sets.
In Portoroz, the right-hander made her way into the semi-final round, leading 6-0 1-0 versus Anna Chakvetadze, however, was taken down 6-0 2-6 2-6, due to her lack of experience and confidence.
Seeded sixth to win the title at the 2010 e-Boks Danish Open tennis competition in Copenhagen, Polona reached the quarter final round, where she was overpowered by Anna Chakvetadze in a total of two sets. The final match score was 4-6, 3-6.
