Tennis Special Report: Richard Gasquet- A look at his performances this season
Born on 18 June 1986, in the city of Beziers, Richard Gasquet is a professional tennis player from France. He captured the mixed doubles French Open title back in 2004, along with Tatiana Golovin. The twenty four year old French achieved his highest ranking of world number seven back in 2007, during the month of July. His best performance so far is the semi final run at the grass court Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon three years ago and later that season, qualifying for the Tennis Masters men’s competition.
As far as his 2010 performances are concerned, the French tennis player, started the season by contesting at the Brisbane International, where he thrashed out Jarkko Nieminen and Matthew Edben before losing to Andy Roddick in the quarter final round in a two setter clash. The final match score was3–6, 6–7(5).
Richard next played at the Medibank International, held in Sydney as his second competition of the season. There he got the better of Feliciano Lopez in the opening round match in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6–1, 6–4. In his second round battle, the right handed Richard thrashed out Benjamin Becker in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6–2, 7–6(4). The French tennis did well to reach the final after defeating Potito Starace, as well as Julien Benneteau in straight sets. However, he was brushed aside in the title battle by Marcos Baghdatis in a two setter clash. The final match score was 4–6, 6–7(2).
At the Australian Open tennis competition, he was beaten by Mikhail Youzhny in the opening round, despite winning match points on several occasions during the third and fourth set. The final match score was 7–6(9), 6–4, 6–7(2), 6–7(4), 4–6.
Gasquet next participated at the 2010 Grand Prix Hassan II where he managed to knock down, Olivier Rochus as well as Andrey Golubev and made his way into the quarterfinal round of the competition. In the quarters, the world number thirty seven was dismissed by his Romanian tennis foe, Victor Hanescu in a tight three setter clash. The final match score was 6–7(3), 6–4, 3–6.
Richard was eliminated in the opening round match of the clay court French Open tennis tournament this season by the fourth seeded Scottish tennis player, Andy Murray in straight sets. According to the rankings of South African Airways, Gasquet has improved from number sixty eight to number forty five on the tour. He fought well throughout the clash and was two sets up against the twenty three year old Murray however, then lost three sets in a row and thus helped the Scott, in winning it comprehensively in the end.
The Neuchatel resident next contested at the AEGON tennis competition, a tune up event for Wimbledon. He easily won his opening round clash versus a Japanese tennis player, Kei Nishikori in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6–3, 6–3. In the second round, the Frenchman once again did well to beat Rajeev Ram in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6–3, 7–5. Richard however, couldn’t continue his winning performance for long as he retired from his third round match as a result of back injury. Later on, he withdrew from the grass court Grand Slam tournament as well, after failing to recover completely.
The Bezier born, Richard Gasquet after returning back on the tour, participated at the 2010 Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad, held in Switzerland. Seeded seventh to win the title, he successfully made his way into the semi final round of the competition after getting the better of Daniel Brands, Albert Montanes as well as Farrukh Dustov. In semi-finals, the French player outlasted Yuri Schukin for a place in the title battle. There he was overpowered by Nicolas Almagro in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7–5, 6–1.
