A Canadian professional ice hockey player, Sidney Patrick Crosby met the Swiss tennis ace, Roger Federer on Sunday. The Shinny hockey star met his sporting idol when a Tennis connection of Canada organized for Crosby to sit down with Roger Federer for a head to head conversation between the national heroes.
The actual plan for Crosby was to play some tennis with the Swiss tennis maestro at York University’s Rexall Centre, where the third ranked tennis ace will play his opening match of the Rogers Cup 2010 on Tuesday. However, the rainy weather changed the practice schedules, therefore the ice hockey player from Canada; Sidney Crosby decided to serve a birthday cake to the right handed Federer, who turned twenty nine on Sunday. On the other hand, Crosby himself celebrated his 23th birthday this year without much celebration at all, as he told the reporters on Sunday.
The Swiss tennis master, Roger Federer while commenting on his age said on Sunday, “I am growing old now; you have an interesting story that you can highlight and talk about, right?” Federer cracked a joke after cutting his birthday cake on Sunday at the York University’s Rexall Centre in Canada.
Crosby while commenting on his likeness towards the game of tennis said that he is a huge fan and plays on the court every time he gets a chance to do so in spite of the fact that he is not good at it, as admitted by the twenty three years old Canadian.
“It’s a wonderful experience as I got an opportunity to meet Roger Federer and some other tennis players as well”, commented the Pittsburgh Penguins skipper. “I like the sport pretty much and I do watch it every time I get some break from my busy schedule and so I am glad that I met some of my favourites in the game”, he added.
While commenting on Federer’s game, the Canadian ice hockey player, Sidney said that, “I watched the entire match when the Swiss master, Roger federer grabbed his fifth United States Open title in a row back in 2008 and like millions other in the world, I really admire his game without any question”, he added.
The twenty nine years old Roger Federer on the other hand greeted Sidney Patrick Crosby on his country’s gold medal victory at the Vancouver Olympics this year.
“He told me that he followed the Olympics Games. I also mentioned the matches I saw him playing on the court, during our conversation which was a pretty general discussion”, said Crosby. “I think it was quite interesting as we had a common topic to debate upon, being a sportsman. He also throw some light on how he became the master of his sports”, added Crosby.
After his birthday celebrations, Federer, Crosby as well as the 2010 grass court Grand Slam champ, Rafael Nadal spent some time together in the players’ locker room as well.
As a result of the rain, Crosby who was wearing tennis shoes as well as shorts however, said sadly that he didn’t get the chance of hitting some tennis balls with one of the greatest players of the game on Sunday.
“I did feel great after meeting all these wonderful guys, however I am sad that I couldn’t manage to hit around with any one of them on the court”, the youngest permanent NHL skipper in history Sidney Crosby , who became a skipper three years ago during the month of May at just nineteen, commented.
