Tennis Special Report: Thieves steal trophies from former Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras
Stealing trophies and some other memorabilia from any player who has earned them over a long and hard career is like stealing memories and milestones from that person’s history.
Former Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras has been robbed of the majority of trophies, medals, plaques, crystal and rings that are a testament to a career that brought a then-record 14 major titles and status as one of the greatest ever to play the game.
He is one of the best players ever produced in Tennis history. Sampras said that the theft had taken place three weeks earlier but he didn’t talk to the media about it until today. Sampras had won 14 Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career and was the
record holder until Roger Fedrer surpassed him.
He still has 13 off the 14 Grand Slam titles he had won. The bigger part of the missing trophies is from the 64 other tour titles he had claimed in his tennis career. Apart from that, the missing trophies are from his Davis cup wins, Olympic ring and six
other trophies for finishing number one from the years 1993 to 1998.
Sampras retired from the sport in 2003 and said that it is disappointing to have lost his trophies and other memorabilia. The achievements have come from hard work and he would have liked to share the memories with his children.
Sampras said that he felt like that his history has been taken away from him after he came to know about the theft. He would like to get the trophies back as soon as possible because achieving them would have taken a lot out of him and loosing them in such
a way is very tragic.
Although the world will always consider him to be one of the finest players to have played in history of tennis, Sampras would still love to have all those trophies of his which he earned giving his life time to the sport.
