Tennis Special Report: Zheng Jie- A recap of her performances this season
Born on 5th July 1983 in the city of Chengdu, Zheng Jie is a professional tennis player from China. She achieved her career high ranking of world number 18 back in 2009 during the month of May. The twenty seven year old, Jie is currently ranked number twenty three in the world by the WTA.
As far as her 2010 performances are concerned, the Chinese professional tennis player started her season by competing at the Moorilla Hobart International as seeded seventh to win the title. In the opening round, Jie got the better of Kaia Kanepi in a time period of almost three hours. The final match score was 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). In the next round, Zheng outlasted Peng Shuai in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1. The twenty seven year old Chinese was then thrashed out by the ultimate winner, Alona Bondarenko in a total of two sets in the quarter final round. The final match score was 7-5 7-5.
Zheng next competed at the hard court Australian Open tennis tournament as his second competition of the season. She narrowly won her opening round clash against Peng Shuai in a total of three sets. The final match score was 0-6, 6-1, and 6-2. In the next round, the Chinese tennis star got the better of her twenty fourth seeded opponent, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in a total of three sets. Jie had another great victory in the round three over the world number eleven, Marion Bartoli in another three setter clash. Zheng did well to register her name as the first tennis player from Chinese to reach the semi final round of the Australian Open tennis tournament, where she was defeated by the former top ranked tennis contender, Justine Henin in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-1, 6-0.
At the Dubai Tennis Championships, Jie was upset in the opening round match by Alicia Molik in a total of three sets. The right handed Chinese next played at the Malaysian Open on the very first occasion in her career where she was thrashed out in the second round by Chang Kai-Chen. She however, captured the doubles trophy at the competition along with Yung-jan Chan, knocking down Arina Rodionova and Anastasia in the final.
Seeded eight at the 2010 BNP Paribas Open tennis competition, Jie after receiving a first round bye hammered down Sorana Cirstea in the round two clash. The final match score was 6-3 7-5. The Chinese successfully made her way into the quarterfinal round of the competition after getting the better of Maria Sharapova as well as Alicia Molik in straight sets. In the quarters, Zheng was dismissed by the second ranked tennis player from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki in a three setter clash. The final match score was 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.
The world number twenty three next participated at the Sony Ericsson tournament, however, lost in her second-round clash with Virgine Razzano in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2.
At the French Open tennis tournament 2010, Zheng was seeded twenty six to win the title. The Chinese however, couldn’t surpass the second round as was beaten by Anastasia Pivovarova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3.
Zheng once again was defeated in the second round of Wimbledon championship at the hands of Petra Kvitova in a total of three sets.
The 1.64 meters tall, Jie next contested at the pilot Pen tennis tournament 2010, held in New Heaven. She however couldn’t even make it into the round two, as was thrashed out by Sara Errani in her opening round clash. The final match score was 6-1, 6-2.
As far as the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open tennis championship is concerned; Zheng Jie was seeded number 21 to win the title. She however couldn’t surpass the round two where the Chinese was toppled by Ana Ivanovic in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-3, 6-0.
