Tennis Update: 2010 Kremlin Cup- Serb Viktor Troicki clinches championship title
Serbia's Viktor Troicki came out victorious at the 2010 Kremlin Cup, defeating Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis in the championship final. Baghdatis initiated the game with a 6-3 win in the first set, however, that seemed to have been all he had to offer as Troicki came back to take the second set 6-4 and furthermore, went on to win the deciding third set 6-3.
In the words of the champion himself, "It feels really great to win my first title, there are no words to describe what is going through my mind. "I would say it's the biggest day of my career. I had been waiting a long time for this. It's special it happened in Moscow as my father is Russian."
Prior to making it through to the finals, the Serb eliminated Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas in the semi-finals of the tournament. Cuevas lost the first set 6-3 and the second set 6-3 to mark a straight set win for Victor. Pablo defeated the no. 5 seed, Russia's Radek Stepanek 6-4 and 7-6 in the quarter-finals to face Troicki in the semi's.
Meanwhile, Baghdatis got through with Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin. Marcos got off to a good start, taking the first set 6-4, however, the two remained evenly contested from there on in. Istomin came back with a 7-6 win in the second set. Nevertheless, Baghdatis responded with a 7-6 win in the decider to take the match. Earlier, Denis deleted Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, beating him 6-2 and 7-6 to make it through to the next round.
Victor got rid of Argentina's Horacio Zeballos in the third round to advance at the tournament. Zeballos lost a disappointing 2-6 and 1-6, two sets in a row to be sent home. Horacio defeated Romania's Victor Crivoi 7-5 and 7-6 to oppose Troicki in the following round.
Seeded no. 3 at the tournament, Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga received a bye into the second round to compete with the Serb. Troicki lost the first set 3-6, however, he turned the tables on Tsonga, taking the second set 6-3. Furthermore, after going nip and tuck in the deciding third set, it was Victor who bagged the set upon his 7-5 win.
In contrast to Jo-Wilfried, Troicki was unseeded and battled it out against wild card entrant, Russia's Dmitry Tursunov in the first round of the 2010 Kremlin Cup. Tursunov took the first set 7-5. Victor nonetheless, bounced back in the second set, only to take it 6-4 and additionally, proceeded to take the third set 6-3.
