Tennis Update: 2010 Stockholm Open- Roger Federer wins his 64th career trophy
The Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer got the better of Florian Mayer from Germany in a two setter clash to win the 2010 Stockholm Open title on Sunday. The final match score was 6-4 6-3.
Federer as a result of this victory has also levelled Pete Sampras's record of sixty four titles on the tour.
The world number two when asked about his title victory after the match said on Sunday, “It is fantastic to come here, face the pressure and be able to come through at the end. Sure the summer was somewhat disappointing, with earlier losses at the French
and at Wimbledon. But I played amazing at the Australian Open and played great at Cincinnati. I just had a bad win-loss record this year in finals.”
The Swedish tennis ace now stands at fourth place in terms of most ATP championships victory, behind Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl as well as John McEnroe. However, Federer enjoys numerous records, including most major men’s singles trophies that he is unlikely
to catch up with Jimmy any time soon. The former world number one from America, Jimmy Connors ended his career with over hundred crowns.
The Basel native was glad to have reached the sixty four mark, as he in his news conference after the match said that you never know when it is your last championship, therefore such victories means a lot. The win gives the Swiss his third title of the season.
He previously won the Australian Open in Melbourne and Cincinnati Masters back in April.
Roger, who has already qualified for the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, received two hundred and fifty South African Airways 2010 ATP Ranking points as champion of the ATP World Tour hard court tennis competition in Sweden. It is
the eighteenth different country in which the right handed Federer has captured an ATP World Tour crown.
The top seed Swiss has come up against some stern resistance on his way into the title battle in Stockholm, including rallying from a set down to beat Stanislas Wawrinka in the final eight battle and was also given a tough time by Mayer as the unseeded player
from Germany took a lead of 4-3 in the opening set. Roger’s response however was quick and potent, though, as the sixteen time Grand Slam champion reeled off three straight games to clinch a lead of one set.
Florian, without a trophy to his name, had a mountain to climb however didn’t perform bad at all, as he played some attacking tennis against the world number two on Sunday.
The German wrong-footed Roger with some classy hits however, a service break during the sixth game of the decisive set put the Swiss tennis master in the driving seat.
"It has been a tough week. I came from Shanghai where I played five matches, then the jet lag and the whole thing, so to back it up with another win is great. I do not remember the season ever finishing as late as it is this year. I am not complaining
because I do not mind a long season as I just take breaks during the season,” said Roger after receiving a title from Crown Princess Victoria.
World number forty seven, Florian Mayer on the other hand, was looking to grab his first ATP World Tour crown after a phenomenal week, including a final eight victory over the fifth ranked Robin Soderling from Sweden. The twenty seven year old Florian as
a result of this loss has dropped down to a career mark of 0-3 in the ATP World Tour finals, having also ended as finalist in Sopot back in 2005, where he was defeated at the hands of Gael Monfils.
