Tennis Update: 2010 U.S Open- Mikhail Youzhny zips through to quarter-finals
Not all of the Russian professionals proved a disappointment at the 2010 U.S. Open, as Moscow’s Mikhail Youzhny made it through to the quarter-finals of the championship today.
The sportsman was made to face Spain’s Tommy Robredo in the fourth round match of his draw. As the match took off, Mikhail and Tommy went head to head in the first set until the Russian ended up taking the set seven games to five.
Proceeding further, Robredo seemed to have lost his spark, as Youzhny clinched the second set based on his six games to two win. Struggling to keep up with the Russian, Tommy managed to make something out of the third set of the match.
Two games down, Robredo took the third set six games to four. Mikhail’s grip on the match seemed to have lightened after his third set loss. However, it was Youzhny who came out victorious in the end. The Russian took the deciding fourth set six games to four.
Based upon his fourth round win, Youzhny will be opposed by Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter-finals of the 2010 U.S. Open.
Prior to his fourth round win, the professional defeated America’s John Isner on home-ground. Mikhail took the first set six games to four. However, Isner responded with a seven game to six win in the second set after taking the tie-breaker.
It was as a matter of fact, all Youzhny in the sets to follow. The sportsman took the third set seven games to six and proceeded to win the fourth deciding set six games to four. Sadly, cracking 24 aces in his second round match didn’t really pay off for Isner, as he was eliminated from the tournament at this point.
Along the side of which, Tommy Robredo defeated Frenchman Michael Llodra in the third round match of his draw. Llodra took the first set 6-3. However, Robredo bounced back with a 7-6 win in the second set. Furthermore, the Spaniard took the third set 6-4, and was on his way to winning the fourth set 2 games up until Llodra retired from the match due to light-headedness.
Unfortunately, Robredo’s dreams were crushed after Youzhny knocked him out of the tournament based upon his fourth round win. As for Youzhny, we can trust that the promising professional will give us an action-packed quarter-final match to witness.
