Tennis Update: 2010 U.S. Open- Verdasco canters through to quarter-finals
Seeded no. 8 in the tournament, publicity clearly isn’t all the ambassador for Calvin Klein cares about. Spanish hunk, Fernando Verdasco clinched his fourth round win to make a place for himself at the quarter-finals of the 2010 U.S. Open in the Men’s singles category.
Verdasco was made to face fellow-countryman David Ferrer in his fourth round match of the draw. The professionals went nip and tuck in the first set. Nevertheless, much to everyone’s surprise, Ferrer took the set seven games to five.
In the set to follow, Verdasco and Ferrer remained evenly matched. Until eventually, the players ended up in a tie-break in the second set of the match. For the second time in a row, Ferrer proved the better sportsman, as he took the second set 7-6 on the tie-break.
Keeping his composure, Verdasco came out stronger in the third set of the match. With his eyes on the prize, the Spaniard defeated Ferrer in the third set, taking it six games to three. Proceeding to the fourth set, Fernando proved more than just able by taking the set six games to three.
Ferrer wasn’t however, going to let Verdasco off that easy. Fighting it out till the very end, David and Fernando ended up in yet another tie-break in the deciding fifth set of the match.
Unlike the last tie-break that the two were made to play, Verdasco took the final set 7-6 based upon his win.  Elated, Fernando celebrated his fourth round win. The Spaniard will be opposed by World no. 1, Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.
Prior to his fourth round match, Fernando defeated Argentinean top seed, David Nalbandian in the third round of his draw. The sportsman took the first set six games to two. However, Nalbandian bounced back with a six game to two win in the second set of the match.
It was however, the Spaniard that took the third set six games to three and the deciding fourth set, six games to two, verily.
Along the side of which, David Ferrer defeated Spanish companion, Daniel Gimeno Traver in his third round match. Ferrer took the first set 7-6 after winning a tie-break. After which, he further went on to win the third set six games to two and the third set six games to two.
Unfortunately, Verdasco ended Ferrer’s reign in the fourth round match played between the two. Over the years, Fernando has shown a lot of potential. Having earlier defeated Nadal, there’s a fair chance we’ll see the professional in the semi-finals of the 2010 U.S. Open.
