Tennis Update: 2011 Hopman Cup- Ana Ivanovic surpasses Alicia Molik in Perth
The Serbian tennis sensation Ana Ivanovic played some great tennis to get past her Australian foe Alicia Molik in two sets at the 2011 Hopman Cup on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-0.
Former world number one who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 2003, took some time to seal the opening set however afterwards did not allow Molik to get back in the game at any stage of the match. The right hander wrapped up the decisive set without
even losing a single game. She needed forty five minutes to win the first set whereas took 20 minutes afterwards to emerge victorious in the end.
Interestingly in her today’s victory, Ana also showed some glimpses of her past that once took her to as high as number one in the South African Airways WTA rankings.
The Belgrade born won the first set versus Alicia after taking advantage from a couple of break point chances. Both of them had their opportunities during the match however it was Ana who kept her double faults and unforced errors under control to earn a
lead of one set. She secured the break earlier during the seventh game however; Molik bounced back in the following game to tie the score at 4-4. Molik made a total of two double faults during the ninth game of the opening set which helped the Serbian to take
a lead of one set.
The decisive set saw complete dominance of Ana as Molik looked totally helpless on the court and couldn’t tackle Serbian’s attacking serve and superb forehand shots. Ana repeatedly broke Molik and in the end took the second set at 6-0.
Earlier in the day, the Belgian side got the better of Kazakhstan 3-0 to keep their hopes alive of advancing into the final after falling to Australia 2-1 on Monday.
