Tennis Update: America's Serena Williams to retract from 2011 Hopman Cup
Reportedly, America's Serena Williams has told the organizers of the 2011 Hopman Cup that she will not be making an appearance at the tournament due to her prolonged foot injury. The professional was recently spotted leaving an
NFL game on crutches. Williams was scheduled to play in Perth with compatriot John Isner but has not played since the 2010 Wimbledon championship. This will be the third time Serena has pulled out of the Hopman Cup.

Williams sustained the foot injury shortly after her Wimbledon win in the month of July, accidently cutting it on glass while out at a restaurant. Apart from getting eighteen stitches, Serena's damaged tendon required her to undergo surgery in order to repair
it. In the year 2003, the American retracted from the Hopman Cup due to a knee injury. Similarly, in the year 2008, a hamstring injury caused Serena to withdraw from the championship.
After pulling out of the 2010 U.S. Open, Williams returned to practice in the month of September. However, the professional retracted from tournaments played in Tokyo, Austria, Beijing and Linz.
Upon withdrawing from the 2010 U.S. Open, Serena exclaimed that she was extremely saddened and frustrated to have had to miss out on the U.S. Open. She also stated that Grand Slams are her life and soul and that she would miss
it more than anyone could ever imagine.
In October 2010, Williams posted an ominous message on her official website, stating that she "likely" would be out of the year. "Pushed by my desire to return to competition, I trained too hard too soon and re-tore the tendon
in my foot. As a result, yesterday morning I had to have another procedure to repair it."
Prior to the foot injury, Serena got off to a good start, clinching the 2010 Australian Open title. The professional defeated Belgium’s Justine Henin 6-4 in the first set, 3-6 in the following set, and 6-2 in the deciding third
set.
Shortly after the win, Serena made it through to the quarterfinals of the French Open. There, however, she faced defeat at the hands of Australia’s Samantha Stosur, as her competitor thrashed her 6-2, 7-6 and 8-6 in their encounter.
