Tennis Update: Andy Murray’s coach issues finally put to rest
Top Brit Andy Murray finally confirmed today that Spaniard Alex Corretja will remain as his main coach for the first half of 2011.
Earlier in the year, rumours made their way into the press that Murray had split with coach Miles Maclagan as well as part time adviser Corretja. However, Maclagan was the only one to go from Murray’s camp. Andre Agassi’s former coach, Darren Cahill was rumoured to replace Maclagan; however, that never happened.
Before Maclagan, Murray has split up with coaches Brad Gilbert and Mark Petchey in the past. Under Maclagan, Murray made it to his first Grand Slam Final at the 2008 US Open. In 2010, Murray made it to another Grand Slam Final at the Australian Open. Nonetheless, a Grand Slam title still eludes the Brit.
A statement made on Murray’s official website today put to rest speculations about his coaches. The statement said, "Andy has taken time out from his busy pre-season fitness training to confirm that the current coaching set-up, with both Alex Corretja and Dani Vallverdu, will continue into the first half of next year. The guys are busy planning their tournament schedule for the early part of 2011 and are, as a team, very focused on preparing in the best way possible for each tournament."
Vallverdu joined the Brit’s camp when Murray split with Maclagan. In 2010, Vallverdu will be assuming Corretja’s former role as a part-time adviser.
Under the coaching team of Corretja and Vallverdu, Murray finished the season ranked fourth in the world with a win loss mark of 46-18. Murray also made an appearance at the season finale event at London falling to Rafael Nadal in the semis.
Murray won the crown at two Masters events earlier in the year. Defeating Swiss maestro Roger Federer on both occasions, Murray lifted the trophy at Shanghai and Montreal. Although Murray failed to defend his title at the Valencia Open 500, he along with his brother Jamie Murray lifted the doubles trophy at the event defeating the team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi.
