Tennis Update: Andy Murray’s run ended in Paris Masters
The British No.1 and No.3 seed was defeated in the quarter final here in Paris on Friday night. Very truly, the Englishman was outclassed by the local favourite Gael Monfils, as it won’t be harsh saying that he deserved the victory as it looked to be a great
contest before the start. The Frenchman brought down the British 6-2 2-6 6-3 in a match lasting for one hour and 48 minutes to be precise.
Murray after being derailed is now to focus on the ATP World Tour Finals being held in London’s O2 arena, as Monfils marches on to meet World No.2 Swiss star Roger Federer in the semi-finals on Saturday. Monfils added that his positive and aggressive approach
kept him focused in a very crucial contest and that he’s opponent was much to low on aggression in comparison. The match started on a very high note for the local favourite and ended also in the same manner, and after the match ended its much easier to say
that Monfils was far better amongst both tennis stars.
Certainly the French will back their local player and that’s seems to be the difference as Monfils seems very high on confidence after Friday’s match. Although he has never beaten Federer in their last 5 or 6 meetings on different venues, but Monfils is
positive that in Paris he will give a tough time to his opponent and try to bring him down for the first time.
Coming back to the quarter final, we cannot rule out that Murray was not at his hundred percent, as he has been struggling with the wrist injury from time to time in the tournament. It was a good start for the English player as he served for the opening
game and hit it at love but was equalled by the French in the second one. In reply, Murray did coupe up with Monfils but sooner than later, the Frenchman started gaining momentum and kept winning games as the set ended on a high for him at 6-2.
After being punished badly in the first set, Murray finally started getting into the act as he started hitting his serves accurately enough unlike the first set, as Monfils was forced to three break points in the sixth game, as Murray won the second of them
at the net. Further improving in the set, Murray won back to back games and in the last game Monfils had the opportunity to make a comeback by hitting a point to break in the next game but fortunate enough for Murray who stayed focused to grab three quick
points to equal the break. His comeback continued as he won the second very deserving set 6-2 by hitting another break over Molfis as he hit the ball into the net.
Starting of the final and deciding set, the Englishman served to love as hopes started building for him to grab the place in the semis. However, it was the Frenchman who made it tough for him in the very next game as both players made errors, as Monfils
held his nerves and it was Murray who gave up first. Coming closer towards the end, it was the local favourite who was in charge bringing back his form that he displayed in the opening set with a combination of heavy, accurate and unplayable serving, forceful
winners and skilful drop shots as he saw of the match winning in style at the score of 6-3.
Murray was disappointed with his performance at not availing the opportunity to face World No.2 Roger Federer. He added that he tried to keep the points shortened and that it started working good for him in the middle but not so good in the decider. Going
to bed at 3 o’clock in the morning the night before the upcoming match is certainly not ideal preparation and it’s difficult to come out and play your best tennis, he added after the defeat.
