Tennis Update: Andy Roddick commits to Team America in the 2011 Davis Cup
United States Captain, veteran Jim Courier announced Andy Roddick’s commitment to the United States team for the 2011 Davis Cup on Friday.
Ranked eighth in the world, Roddick is extremely excited to represent his country in the 2011 event. He has made winning the Davis Cup his top priority for the year 2011. Talking about his entry into the team, Roddick said, “I’m
very excited to be back on the U.S. Davis Cup team. I have always said that Davis Cup is something you should commit to for the entire season and not when it is convenient. Trying to win the Davis Cup again is a top priority for me in 2011. Nothing compares
to the atmosphere of playing a Davis Cup match and representing your country.”
Jim Courier is extremely pleased with the opportunity to sit beside Roddick and help him at his very best in the Davis Cup. Courier replaced Patrick McEnroe as the 40th U.S. team Captain.
Ranked eighth in the world, Roddick has an excellent record of 31-11 in his nine years of competing in the event. He is the second in most consecutive years at the event behind McEnroe. He has played in 42 Davis Cup matches for
the U.S. leading his team to a title win in 2007 against Russia.
Until now, Roddick has played under the captaincy of McEnroe. However, Roddick looks forward to playing under Courier in 2011. Talking about the new captain, Roddick said, “I look forward to working with Jim next season. It
will be strange to be sitting next to someone other than Patrick on the bench, but I have a great deal of respect for Jim. He is a fierce competitor and I know he holds Davis Cup in the same esteem that I do. He had so many memorable Davis Cup victories,
but the one that will always stick with me most is when he clinched the title for the United States in 1992 since I was in Ft. Worth to see that match in person as a kid.”
Roddick will play his first match at the event in March, as United States take on Chile in the World Group First Round in Santiago.
Roddick finished his 2010 season ranked eighth; this was his eighth straight year in the top 10. Enjoying a win-loss mark of 48-18, Roddick finished the season with a title win at Brisbane and then a win at the Miami Masters. He
also made it into the elite eight-man field at the season finale event in London. Roddick looks to open his 2011 season at the Brisbane International in January.
