Tennis Update: Andy Roddick loses his temper at the Second-Round Match at U.S. Open after being called for a foot fault
Andy Roddick had a lengthy argument with the U.S. Open lineswoman during the second round at Flushing Meadows over a foot fault call on Wednesday night.
The 2003 U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick faced many problems during Wednesday night, where he was defeated in the second round by Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia with 3-6 7-5 6-3 7-6.
The 44th ranked Serbian player’s go-for-broke style paid him the victory last night. “He played very high-risk and executed for four sets, I kept telling myself, ‘You know, this has to have an expiration date on it.’ Unfortunately, I needed another set for that.” said Roddick
There was an argument between Roddick and The official over a foot-fault call on a first serve. He turned to the official and asked, “What foot?” When she told him that it was his right foot, he replied, “That’s impossible.” He turned to the chair Empire and asked that his right foot gone in front of his left foot ever in his career, the empire replied that she hasn’t experienced such a fault yet in her matches.
Many news channels were broadcasting it later that Roddick has accepted his fault but with his left toes. What really bothered him that the official didn’t commit that she blamed his right foot for the ruling.
Indeed, asked later what might have happened if the lineswoman said the call was made because his left sneaker was on the baseline, he replied: “There would have been no discussion.”
However, Roddick retaliated, although he didn’t speak harshly to the lineswoman like Serena Williams, when she launched a tirade at line judge on a foot call in the end of the semi-finals, where Kim Clijsters defeated her.
Roddick was so sure that not even once in his career his right foot went in front of his left foot. Due to double fault, he missed his second serve and then continued arguing with the official. In the start of the fourth set, the lineswoman was not on the court, when Roddick was called twice for the foot faults. In his news conference, he said that he wasn’t upset by the initial call except the right vs. left issue.
Tipsarevic played really well. He has a losing record in Grand Slams and overall he is now 2-1 against Roddick, having beaten the American in the second round at Wimbledon 2008 too. He served well during the match, hitting 16 aces and saved three of five break points he faced. Before this, he never reached the third round of Grand Slam in his career but now will play No.17 Gael Monfils.
“I didn’t feel I played too risky,” Tipsarevic said. “I was just playing good.”
Roddick has won his one Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows and he was also runner up in 2006. Before this match, he was also defeated in the fourth round at Wimbledon on the summer hard court circuit. He revealed recently that he had a mild case of mononucleosis, the same illness that hurt Roger Federer’s form in 2008, whereas his doctors say that he is in larger stages and will make the recovery soon. Roddick didn’t want to come to New York, as he was not feeling 100 percent good.
The ninth seeded Andy Roddick faced many disappointments during 2010. The year was not as peaceful as he thought. He was defeated in the quarterfinals of 2010 Australian Open, where he was seeded No. 7. Similarly in Cincinnati Masters he was defeated by number two seed Djokovic in the quarterfinals and finally in U.S. Open 2010. where he is defeated first time in the second round by a Serbian player.
Roddick has disappointed his fans and all those people who love to see tennis, through his weak performance in the third round. Hopefully, this young boy will perform well in the upcoming matches and live up to the expectations of his fans and will not disappoint them again.
