Tennis Update: Argentine Juan Martin del Potro to play 2011 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships
Formerly ranked number four in the world, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro is said to be gearing up to start afresh at the upcoming 2011 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. Del Potro has been mostly missing from the
tennis scene during 2010 due to a wrist injury.
In 2009, del Potro won the 2009 US Open Men's Singles final. Del Potro battled it out with legendary Swiss star Roger Federer to eventually bring a close to the arduous five-set tussle, taking the match 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 and 6-2
to clinch the championship title. The Argentine made history by becoming the first and thus far only person to beat both Federer and Rafael Nadal in the same Grand Slam tournament.
In 2010, del Potro failed to make it past the fourth round at the Australian Open, when he was defeated 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7 and 6-3 by Marin Cilic of Croatia. Subsequently, due to an unfortunate wrist injury, del Potro was unable
to play most tournaments this year. But now he appears to be all set to turn things around in the new year.
The 19th Delray Beach International Tennis Championships will be played from the 18th to the 27th of February 2011 at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. The tournament promises to be very exciting. In the words of tournament
director Mark Baron, "With two US Open champions already signed, without a doubt this ATP World Tour singles draw is shaping up to be the best in our history. Mardy Fish and John Isner finished 2010 in the top 20, and Fish could be in the Top 10 by tournament
time. And having tennis' favourite ‘bad boy’ McEnroe back for our ATP Champions Tour event just makes us ecstatic about 2011."
