Tennis Update: Art and Tennis come together once more at 2011 Qatar
With only days left in the ATP season opener at Doha, the Qatar Tennis Foundation have arranged for another attraction at the event this year. With recent success from the “Art of Tennis” at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals,
the QTF announced today its “Lights On” exhibition.
An exhibition of Ritmus Ivanovs’ unique paintings, the “Lights On” exhibition will be from the 3rdof January until the 8th of January at the VIP Village during the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.
Talking about bringing Ivanovs to Qatar, Tournament Director Karim Alami said, “We are very honoured to be showing Ritmus Ivanovs’ paintings at our tournament. QTF is always trying to offer something different at its tournaments
and we think that the spectators will truly appreciate seeing tennis this way in a different light.”
Studying light and linear techniques, Ivanovs believed the tennis courts flooded with lights during matches occasionally helps reveal the inner world of the tennis players. Ivanovs looked to capture this moment in time.
Ivanovs has chosen ten great players from the world of tennis, four of which will be present at the tournament next week. Included in these paintings will be Swiss maestro Roger Federer, Spaniard Rafael Nadal, Frenchman Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga and Russian Nikolay Davydenko.
Ivanovs is one of the promising Latvian artists to hit the scene recently. He made it on the international horizon in 2009 after a successful sale at Sotheby’s London.
In recent efforts to bring Art and Tennis together, the tournament administration of Barclays ATP World Tour Finals created eight unique self-portraits of the elite-eight at the season finale event. Each of the elite-eight served
tennis balls dipped in paint onto a white canvas covered with a stencil depicting each player’s signature move. These portraits were later auctioned off to charity. Federer and Nadal were also part of this unique experience.
