Tennis Update: Belgium's Kim Clijsters wins WTA Player of the Year award
Presently ranked no. 3 in the World, Belgian Kim Clijsters bagged the 2010 Women's Tennis Association Player of the Year award upon performing consistently on court apart from showing brilliance off court.
“This year I met a lot of new girls and it was very nice that so many of them had positive reactions to my daughter Jada as well. I want to thank my fellow players and the media who voted for me and I look forward to seeing everyone
again in Australia. It's really nice to win the Player of the Year award just one year after making a comeback and, while I didn't think it would come so quickly, I am thrilled with the news,” stated Clijsters.
After having taken over two years off to start a family life, ace-mom Clijsters made a historical comeback taking the 2010 U.S. Open Women's singles title. Seeded no. 2 at the tournament, Kim defeated USA's Venus Williams in the
semi finals of her draw. Williams got off to a good start taking the first set 6-4. That, however, seemed to have been all she had to offer as Clijsters took the second set 7-6 and the following set 6-4 to face Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the championship
final.
Zvonareva made it through after defeating Dane Caroline Wozniacki in the semi finals of the championship. Currently ranked no. 1 in the World, Wozniacki lost the first set 4-6 and the second set 3-6 to be eliminated from the tournament.
Furthermore, Clijsters initiated the championship final with a 6-2 win in the first set and went on to take the deciding second set 6-1 to clinch the 2010 U.S. Open title. Additionally, Kim became the first woman to retain the
U.S. Open title since Venus Williams in the year 2001. The Belgian also became the second woman in the Open Era to win three successive U.S. Open titles.
The U.S. Open win also made Clijsters the third woman to win two grand slams being a mother. In addition, the win also added to Kim's 21 consecutive U.S. Open match victories.
