Tennis Update: Brunei schedules 34 tennis tournaments in 2011
The BDTA, or Brunei Darussalam Tennis Association has recently released a tentative calendar of tennis tournaments the Association hopes to hold in 2011. If the schedule follows through, this year promises to be full of tournaments and challenges for tennis
in Brunei, with a total of thirty-four tournaments.
The schedule has at least two events scheduled every month, except for August in which the Holy Month of Ramadan and Hari Raya will take place. Most of the tournaments will take place at the National Tennis Centre at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports
Complex, in Berakas. However, this is not the only tennis venue; the first official event will take place at the Brunei Shell Recreation Club in Seria. The events planned for this centre are the Butcher, SCA and Kamaruddin Cups (which will take place from
11 to 13 February). The Inter District and Sharifuddin Cup will be held at the same venue on 3
July, 2011.
Meanwhile, the Panaga Club will be hosting the Munchkin Under-10 and Under-12 years old events from 8 May. The Panaga Club is the only other tennis club in said district.
The Berakas-based Brunei Tennis Club will welcome the BDTA Open Veteran onto its courts from 21 to 27 February, days before the BDTA Men’s Veteran Team and Fung’s Trophy begins in mid-April. Centre court will also be home to the Ladies Doubles Cup and the
Marshall Club towards the end of October 2011.
In addition to this, the National Tennis Centre will also host the most prestigious, widely anticipated tennis event, the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit. This is the 43rd time the event is being held, and it will take place 8 to
13 March. This is one of two international events in Brunei’s schedule, with the second tournament being the Malaysian ITF Junior World Ranking. This event will be held in Miri, Sarawak in October.
The Sultan Cup will be held in July, for both singles and doubles tournaments. The BDTA also intends to attend the Borneo Games and the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, to be held in November.
