Tennis Update: Juan Martin del Potro returns in February at the San Jose event
After being absent for most part of the ATP regular season in 2010, Juan Martin Del Potro returns to the ATP circuit in February 2011 at the San Jose event. The SAP Open at San Jose is an ATP 250 event played in the second week
of February at the HP Pavilion at San Jose.
Del Potro rose to success in 2009 when he finished the year as the youngest player in the top 10, ranked fifth in the world. He became the first player to defeat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in a Grand Slam event. Defeating
them in the semi final and the final match of the 2009 United States Open, Del Potro bagged his first and so far his only Grand Slam title. He finished the season with three titles to his name winning at Washington and Auckland. Del Potro also enjoyed a final
run in the season finale event although he lost the chance of a title win losing to Nikolay Davydenko.
Ranked fourth in the world in January 2010, Del Potro made a fourth round appearance in the Australian Open falling to eventual semi-finalist Marin Cilic. However, plagued by a wrist injury and then undergoing surgery in May, Del
Potro was absent for eight months in 2010. Although he made appearances at the Tokyo and Bangkok event later in 2010, he was forced to exit in the first round.
Due to his inactivity in 2010, Del Potro was ranked out of the Top 250 currently ranked 268 in the world. Nonetheless, Del Potro returns in 2011 to return to the top 10.
Del Potro will return to San Jose for the second time in 2011 February. He earlier had had a quarterfinal run in 2009, losing to Mardy Fish. Talking of his return, Del Potro said, "I am really happy to come back and play in
San Jose. This is an important tournament for my comeback and I look forward to playing well and winning as many matches as possible."
Given his passion and desire for a better performance in 2011, tennis fans can expect excellent tennis action from their favourite Argentinean.
