Tennis Update: Modest, Caroline Wozniacki doesn’t rate herself high to win the title in Montreal and New York
A Danish professional tennis player from the women’s side, Caroline Wozniacki is of the view that she is not the top favourite to win the Rogers Cup Women’s tennis tournament 2010 this year in Montreal.
However, there is no doubt about the fact that the second seeded Caroline looked extremely good in her yesterday’s quarter final clash against her Italian opponent, Francesca Schiavone. She won the clash against the seventh seeded Francesca quite comfortably in a total of two sets with a final match score of 6-3, 6-2.
Wozniacki added that there are still a couple of players left in the final four who have even brighter chances and the result would depend largely on how they are going to fight on the given day.
She performed quite impressively in her yesterday’s quarterfinal clash against Schiavone and as a result also managed to avenge her two previous defeats at the hands of Francesca, including her most recent one at the clay court French Open tournament this year.
"These are two different championships”, said Wozniacki. "Francesca played well at the clay court French Open competition without any question and won the title. Today, however I served better than her and as a result she couldn’t control the pressure situation.”
Wozniacki, who also practices boxing during her training sessions, said that it doesn’t necessarily help her in playing more aggressively on the court.
"The only advantage I feel as a result of boxing practice is that it helps me in my foot movement on the court,” said Wozniacki.
Wozniacki's opponent in today’s first semi final round of the Rogers Cup Women tennis tournament will be Svetlana Kuznetsova, an eleventh seeded Russian , who cruised with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Zheng Jie from China.
The second semi final of the competition that will start at 7 pm local time, will feature the tenth seeded Victoria Azarenka, as well as the eight seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva in Montreal.
Vera upset the fifth seeded Belgian tennis ace, Kim Clijsters in her quarterfinal clash during which Clijsters once again felt pain in her hip that eventually affected the outcome of the match as well. The final match score was 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
With the final major of the season, the United States Open just around the corner, one might expect Clijsters to back off when her hip is creating problems for her during the game. However, this isn’t the case at all.
"I hate to back off," Clijsters clarified.
Clijsters further added that she would not blame the defeat on her hip injury, in spite of the fact that it clearly affected her game during the second set of the match in Montreal.
"I am feeling the pain for the last few days,” said Kim. "I felt it even more in my today’s match. It was quite disturbing though particularly during the second set of the match however I won’t put the blame on it.”
The good news for the organizers of the United States Open tennis tournament is that Kim Clijsters said that she is going to recover soon and will participate in the upcoming US Open at the Flushing Meadows. The major has already been hit by the absence of Justine Henin, as well as Serena Williams, who recently announced her withdrawal from the United States Open tennis tournament. She has not played most of the summer hard court season as a result of her foot surgery as well.
Serena's absence implies that Wozniacki will likely enter the Flushing Meadows as the top seeded player from the women’s side to win the title.
"It is highly honourable for me to be seeded number one in a major event however I don’t think that it will affect my game by any means or result in increasing pressure on me,” said Caroline. "You still have to go out on the court and play your clashes. I go out on every single occasion with a hope to win in the end.”
