Tennis Update: Nadal and Venus Wrap Friday up in Straight-Set Fashion at US Open
King of Clay, Spain’s Rafael Nadal made a dramatic comeback in the second set of his second round match at the Flushing Meadows to record an impressive 6-2 7-6 7-5 victory over Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
The top seed and world number one is bidding for a maiden U.S. Open title that will complete his collection of grand slam titles.
In the second set of his tie against the 39th ranked Istomin, the Spaniard trailed 5-1 before making a spellbinding comeback to overcome the brilliance of his Central Asian rival.
The crowd at the renowned Arthur Ashe Stadium was at its feet at this juncture as they witnessed a high class performance from both players.
The Spaniard then regained his touch by playing some mesmerizing tennis on his way to winning six consecutive points and pocketing the tiebreaker.
Nadal, who has already pocketed the French and Wimbledon titles this year is set to take on Frenchman Gilles Simon, who went past Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
There was success also for the fourth-seeded Andy Murray of Britain, who overcame dodgy weather and some fierce serves especially in the first two sets to bring curtains to the tournament for Jamaican Dustin Brown.
Murray prevailed over his unseeded opponent with a score line of 7-5 6-3 6-0.
The 123rd-ranked Brown looked set to give a real fight to the Brit before conceding a service break in the first set of the match.
The next set was far easier for his as he sailed through losing only three more games, pocketing the final set with a crushing 6-0 score line.
Murray would now be taking on the 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who prevailed against Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.
In women’s draw Kim Clijsters of Belgium fought back tenaciously recording a 6-3 6-0 win against Petra Kvitova, which helped her book a fourth round spot.
In another match, American tennis sensation Venus Williams gave a brilliant performance on the court, as she whipped qualifier Mandy Minella of Luxembourg to book her slot in the fourth round of the famed tournament.
Williams seeded third this year recorded a 6-2 6-1 victory over her 185th ranked opponent who managed to hold onto her serve just once in the match.
The American paid special attention to her attire for the match, sporting a short black dress with revealing cut-outs in the back.
The older of the Williams sister next takes on 16th seed Shahar Peer of Israel.
The Israeli scored a commanding win over Flavia Pennetta of Italy with the final score line being 6-4 and 6-4.
In another match, the reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone cruised through to the fourth round with a 6-1 7-5 win over Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian ended Melanie Oudin's U.S. Open in round two recorded a 33 minute triumph in the first set of the match and would take on Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who is seeded 20th in the tournament.
Later in the day, Australian Sam Stosur continued her golden run in the tournament which is already her best ever stay here with a 6-2 and 6-3 win over Italy's Sara Errani 6-2 6-3.
Seeded fifth in the tournament, she has made it to the round of sixteen her for the first times, as the finalist at the French Open recorded three breaks of serves in the first set of the match to ensure an easy passage to the pre-quarters.
Stosur will now take on 12th seed Elena Dementieva of Russia.
