Tennis Update: Newcome suggests that Australia's Samantha Stosur improves backhand
John Newcombe of Australia stated that he believes that Australian professional Samantha Stosur's backhand is one of her major weaknesses, at the 2010 Australian Tennis Awards in Melbourne.
''I think if she could improve her backhand she'd have a real possibility of becoming No.1. I'd give her backhand probably a six out of 10, and if she could get that up to a seven and a half or an eight out of 10, she could become No.1,'' stated Newcombe.
Presently ranked no. 6 in the World, Stosur took John's comments into consideration but apparently prefers to work on her strengths in comparison to her weaknesses as she heads into the new season.
''Of course I could improve my backhand; there's lots of things I'd like to be better at, but I've got a pretty good forehand, so I guess I can make up for that in other ways,'' she told the Herald while training at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre for
next month's Sydney International. I think not too many people have flawless games besides Roger [Federer]. [My backhand] is not as good as my forehand but I can't say I lose too many matches because of my backhand at the moment," said Samantha.
The professional went on to add that she believes that her back-hand has gotten better and better and is aware of the fact that girls try to hit to that side more than her forehand which has helped improve her game.
Training for four weeks, Stosur exclaimed that she was not devoting extra time to her backhand. The professional said that one of the main reasons that she has improved over the years is because she works on her strengths and works around everything instead
of thinking, 'Oh my God, that's not so good so I've got to make that that little bit better.'
Furthermore, the professional believes that she wins matches because of her strengths, not because one of her weaknesses got 5 per cent better. Additionally, she believes that this is a good time to work on, not just her weaknesses, but her strengths. "It's
the only time of the year you get to work on absolutely everything," stated Samantha.
Stosur is yet to have won a major tournament in Australia. In spite of the fact that the professional was expected to fare well, Samantha was deleted from the 2010 Sydney International as early as in the first round. Stosur's best result in the tournament is
from the year 2005, losing the final to Alicia Molik.
