Tennis Update: Novak Djokovic- A look at the journey of U.S Open runner up this year
Born on 22 May 1987 in the city of Belgrade, Novak Djokovic is a professional tennis player from Serbia. The twenty three year old Novak is currently ranked number two in the world by the Association of tennis professionals. He has so far won a single major
title, the Australian Open tennis tournament back in 2008 and registered his name as the first player from Serbia to capture a Grand Slam title. Moreover, Djokovic is also the youngest contender in the open era who has successfully managed to make his way
into the semi final rounds of all the four major tournaments.
As far as this year is concerned, Novak Djokovic started the season by playing at the Australian Open tennis tournament. The Serbian did well to reach the quarter final round of the year’s first Grand Slam, where he was eventually dismissed by Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga in a total of five sets. The final match score was 6–7(8), 7–6(5), 6–1, 3–6, 1–6.
The Monaco resident next contested at the ABN AMRO World Tennis championship as his second competition of the season, in Rotterdam. He however, couldn’t make it that far and was defeated in the second round by Mikhail Youzhny in a two setter clash. The final
match score was 6–7(5), 6–7(6).
At the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament which was held in Indian Wells, Djokovic was defeated in the round 4 at the hands of eventual winner, Ivan Ljubicic in a total of two sets. The final match score was 5–7, 3–6. The Serbian next suffered a shock in
Miami at the Sony Ericsson Open, where he was toppled in the first round match by Olivier Rochus in a three setter clash. The final match score was 2–6, 7–6(7), 4–6.
Seeded third at the 2010 French Open tennis tournament, Novak Djokovic got the better of Evgeny Korolev, Robby Ginepri, Victor Hanescu as well as , Kei Nishikori on his way to the quarter final round. In the quarters, the right handed player was however
outlasted by Jurgen Melzer in a total of five sets. The final match score was 3–6 2–6 6-2 7-6(3) 6-4.
Djokovic next appeared at the All England Club as seeded third to win the Wimbledon title in London. He surpassed Alberto Montanes, Olivier Rochus, Yen-Hsu Lu, Lleyton Hewitt as well as Taylor Dent on his way to the semi final round of the grass court Grand
Slam championship. The Serbian however, couldn’t outshine his semi final opponent, Tomas Berdych to confirm his title berth. The final match score was 6-3, 7–6, and 6–3.
At the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Toronto, the 1.88 meters tall Novak was eliminated by the world number three Swiss, Roger Federer in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
The Belgrade born tennis star was extremely close of losing in the first round, against Viktor Troicki however did well in the end to win in a total of five sets. The final match score was 6–3, 3–6, 2–6, 7–5, 6–3. He then got the better of James Blake, Philipp
Petzschner, Mardy Fish as well as Gael Monfils to make his way into the semi final round in New York. The Serbian next met Roger Federer and successfully thrashed him out after a close match to confirm his final berth. The match score was 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2,
7-5. In the title battle, the world number one, Rafael Nadal however, overpowered the Serbian in a total of four sets to complete his career Grand Slam. The final match score was 4-6 7-5 4-6 2-6.
