Tennis Update: PTT Thailand Open & Malaysian Open- Tuesday Preview
A total of seven singles clashes are scheduled for Tuesday at the PTT Thailand Open tennis tournament, also featuring the much awaited comeback of the fifth seeded and 2009 United States Open winner, Juan Martin Del Potro.
The twenty two year old tennis player from Argentina, who underwent a wrist surgery earlier this year during the month of May, is contesting in his first clash since a five set round of sixteen defeat at the hard court Australian Open tennis tournament back
in January. This is the Tandil native’s second championship of the season and he comes in ranked number thirty six in the world. He achieved his career high ranking of world number four back in January, this season.
He will play a Belgian tennis player Olivier Rochus on the very first occasion in the featured evening clash. Last year, Del Potro captured a total of three hard court trophies in Washington, United States Open as well as Auckland and ended a season end
best number five. He concluded the year with a finalist effort at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which was held in London.
In the opening match of the day, the top seeded tennis player from Israel Dudi Sela will meet Konstantin Kravchuk, a qualifier from Russia who got the better of 2007 Bangkok winner Dimitry Tursunov in the final round of qualifying on Monday.
Second up, the thirty four year old Rainer Schuettler, who is the oldest tennis contender in the singles draw, will meet the second ranked Brazilian, Richardo Mello. Richard won in their last clash five years ago in the opening round of the Munich.
In the third clash of Tuesday, Jarkko Niemen from Finald will take one a wild card entrant Danai Udomchoke from Thailand on the second occasion. The Finnish left-handed tennis player won the opening clash 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of this championship
seven years ago.
There is one other seed on today’s schedule; the eight seeded Michael Berrer from Germany will play on the court number one versus the Spaniard tennis ace, Guillermo Garcia Lopez.
In some other action in Kuala Lumpur, a total of four first round matches will be played on the hard court of the Malaysian Open tennis tournament on Tuesday.
First up on the Centre Court is Laurent Recouderc versus Alexandr Dolgopolov. Laurent won the pair’s only match five years ago when the Ukrainian tennis player was just sixteen year old. Alexandr is currently ranked number fifty five in the world whereas
Laurent is number 207 by the ATP.
Next up is a Russian tennis player Igor Andreev against Go Soeda. Both of them are hovering just outside the top hundred as Ignor is ranked number 104, whereas Go is number 102. The top ranked Japanese, Soeda is contesting in his very first ATP World Tour-level
hard court championship in almost a season, his previous appearance on this court at this level coming in Tokyo back in 2009. Igor is a former top twenty tennis player who is contesting here on the very first occasion.
The final clash on Centre court will feature the sixth seeded, Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus and Kei Noshkori on Tuesday. Marcos has had a strong year; beginning at number forty two however, now has improved his rankings to number eighteen in the world after
making his way into the quarters or better on eight different occasions. He is looking to recover after a shock opening round defeat at the United States Open tennis tournament, this being his first championship since then.
Marcos ousted Kei in their only last meeting however; the Japan native has improved his game and rankings since then. He was number 898 back in March and is now number 123 after capturing three Challenger trophies along with a third round run at the United
States Open tennis tournament in New York.
This is his first championship since the year’s final Grand Slam, where he withdrew as a result of his groin injury versus Albert Monatnes.
