Tennis Update: Rafael Nadal all set to play at the Rogers Cup 2010
The top ranked Spaniard tennis ace, Rafael Nadal will appear in his very first championship at the Rogers Cup 2010 in Toronto, since winning the grass court Grand Slam title last month at the All England Club. The championship serves as a tune up event prior to the final Grand Slam tournament, the United States Open competition of the season.
Nadal has reached the York University after travelling all the way from Johannesburg, where he went to watch his darling Spain that won the football World cup. It’s a good opportunity for the 2010 Wimbledon champ to test his knees that underwent some treatment after the grass court Grand Slam victory. He will definitely be looking forward to win this year’s US Open title at the Flushing Meadows, in order to complete his Grand Slam deed, provided he remains fit throughout the tournament in the city of New York. The event will start at the Flushing Meadows from the 30th of this month. The US Open is the only title that the Spaniard has yet to grab in his career.
Moreover, Rafa will have to fight really hard in order to win the US Open title in the presence of players like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer as well as the last year’s champ Juan Martin Del Potro, who is also likely to defend his title in New York.
As far as his previous stats of Rogers Cup 2010 is concerned, the number one tennis player from the men’s side, Rafael Nadal won the trophy previously two years ago in 2008, in Toronto, as well as in 2005, in the city of Montreal. The championship rotates between these two cities in Canada. He has been seeded number one this time for the championship with the Serbian tennis ace, Novak Djokovic as the second seeded player. Djokovic along with Rafa, as well as the third seeded Federer, will play their first competition since the grass court 2010 Wimbledon.
The second seeded Novak grabbed the Rogers Cup title back in 2007, however was knocked down in the quarterfinal clash last year. The Swiss tennis player, Roger Federer on the other hand is seeded number three for the competition after falling down by the Czech Republic, Tomas Berdych in the quarter final round of Wimbledon 2010.
The twenty nine years old Swiss in order to overcome his recent back to back defeats, went on a luxury yacht the previous month along with his family. Just a week ago, Federer finished his seven days practice session with the German tennis ace, Philipp Kohlschreiber in Europe.
The pressure is definitely on the long time tennis king, Roger Federer more than anyone else, who seriously needs to rescue his year with a sixth United States Open title from the last seven falls.
Rafa, meanwhile, will also make use of his fitness by participating in the doubles matches along with Novak Djokovic.
"Last season I didn’t participate as I had issues with my knee. This season however with my body and health in shape, I am really looking forward to it”, said the Spaniard Nadal.
While commenting on his teaming up with Novak for the doubles matches, the top seeded Rafael Nadal said that, “Doubles is a very significant part of the game of tennis and it helps a player in improving all aspects of his game. Fighting with Djokovic will definitely provide both of us with an opportunity to learn each other’s strength. He is undoubtedly one of the most capable tennis players I have seen”, said the top ranked Nadal.
