India's Sania Mirza bagged her first title in over a year thrashing Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia. Jovanovski got off to a good start taking the first set 6-4. That however, seemed to have been all she had to offer as Mirza took the second set 6-3 and the
deciding third set 6-0 to win $75,000 in prize money at the 13th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge in Dubai.
“She was amazing in the third set. I had no answer to anything she sent across,” stated Jovanovski. Furthermore, Mirza stated that she was extremely pleased with her performance having entering the tournament as an unseeded player.
“This has been a dream end for my season. I will stay back in Dubai for another two days and proceed to India for a few days before going to Auckland (for the new season). It’s nice to win against Javanovski as I lost to her twice earlier". "I just hope to
stay fit for a whole new season,” added Sania.
Sania had been struggling due to a wrist injury during the past three years. The professional reached a career high of no. 27 in the year 2007 and came into the tournament ranked No. 164. Additionally, Mirza is quite likely to make it to the Top 145 when
the rankings are released this Monday, she will nevertheless require a wild card to get straight into the 2011 Australian Open.
The 13th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge was held at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa. The Chairman Al Habtoor Group of Companies, namely Khalaf Al Habtoor, awarded Sania with a special gift apart from having given her an annual membership at the Habtoor Grand
Resort and Spa.
Mirza teamed up with Edina Gallovits of Romania to take on Han Xinyu and Liu Wan-ting of the People's Republic of China to clinch the 2010 Guangzhou International Women's Open in the month of September. Sania and Edina initiated the game with a 7-5 win and
went on to take the second set 6-3 to bag the Women's doubles title. In addition, the Indian professional ended the year on a high taking and will hopefully rise in terms of her performance in the 2011 season that looms.
