Tennis Update: Serb Novak Djokovic's father thinks the Serbian tennis federation requires changes
Ranked no. 3 in the World, Novak Djokovic of Serbia's father, Srdjan Djokovic believes that the Serbian tennis federation (TSS) deserved absolutely no credit for the national team's first and only Davis Cup win and needed "a thorough reconstruction."
"The present TSS leadership, headed by Slobodan Zivojinovic, has nothing to do with Serbia's Davis Cup victory; we are the world tennis champions thanks to the players and their families only," the elder Djokovic said in a statement released to Belgrade media.
"I have no ambition to take over from Zivojinovic but the TSS needs a thorough reconstruction."
Davis Cup coach, Bogdan Obradovic of Serbia agreed to all that Djokovic stated saying that the Serbian Tennis Federation had not supported the players enough. The Serbian team defeated the French team 3-2 in the 2010 Davis Cup final played in Belgrade last
weekend.
"The Djokovic family wants fresh forces to take over and I am sure this will happen because both the players and I support changes, We need better facilities and I won't speculate who will replace whom in the TSS but I can assure you that staff changes will
be made. The players have received slim financial support from the TSS all these years while we have achieved an incredible result by winning the Davis Cup in our first final. I know that we don't have resources like countries such as the United States but
investments have to be at least partially proportional to our results," said Obradovic.
Additionally, the President of the Serbian Tennis Federation, Zivojinovic's four year mandate as president ends this month. The president however stated to the media that he will most definitely be running for the post again.
Zivojinovic believes that after all that the federation has achieved this year, it is only natural for him to run for another four year mandate in order to complete the tasks ahead, referring to building a national tennis centre apart from facilitating other
young talents.
Furthermore, Zvojinovic stated that he has had the privilege of being the president of the Serbian tennis federation in the most successful year for Serbian tennis and added that he has a realistic program for the next four year period, devoid of unrealistic
promises which he believes cannot be kept.
