Tennis Update: Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark crowned World Champions by ITF
Presently ranked no. 1 in the World, Rafael Nadal of Spain and Dane Caroline Wozniacki were officially named International Tennis Federation World Champions by the ITF.
International Tennis Federation president Francesco Ricci Bitti stated,
“This has been another memorable year for tennis. Nadal has proved himself to be one of the greatest competitors in the sport’s history, while Caroline Wozniacki has shown a strong determination and continuous commitment to the game to earn the women’s
No. 1 ranking at such a young age.”
Furthermore, Nadal bagged his fifth French Open Men's singles title, his second Wimbledon title apart from having clinched the 2010 U.S. Open Men's singles title. Rafa came to be the youngest ever professional in the open era to
have completed a career grand slam.
“It is an honor to be named ITF World Champion for the second time. After a difficult year in 2009, it was an amazing feeling to regain the No. 1 ranking and finally win the U.S. Open. My goal all the time is to keep improving
and be a better player each year than I was the previous year,” said Nadal.
As for Wozniacki, the Dane became the fourth youngest tennis professional after Martina Hingis, Monica Seles and Steffi Graf to clinch the year end World no. 1 ranking. Wozniacki stated that she is very proud of the fact that she
has been listed with all of the former ITF World Champions apart from saying that 2010 was a great year for her and that the professional is training for an even better year in 2011.
In spite of the fact that Caroline was the most consistent female professional, winning six Women's Tennis Association titles, Wozniacki is yet to have won a grand slam tournament. However, the professional made the semifinals
of the 2010 U.S. Open and the quarterfinals of the 2010 Roland Garros.
Additionally, Bob and Mike Bryan were crowned the 2010 Men’s doubles World Champions for the seventh time in eight years. The pair bagged 11 titles apart from clinching two trophies at the 2010 Australian Open and 2010 U.S. Open.
