Tennis Update: Swiss star Roger Federer looking forward to 2012 Olympics

Despite possessing an innumerable amount of titles and medals to his name, Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has yet to bag a men's singles gold medal. But Federer is confident that he will have an Olympic gold medal in his collection by 2012, when the Olympics
are held in London.

The sport of tennis was reintroduced to the Olympics in the year 1988. Federer believes that at the Olympics, the focus is on swimming and athletics while tennis has always been relatively forgotten. “At the last couple of Olympics, the best players are always
playing. Rafa (Nadal) winning the singles in Beijing, me winning the doubles over there, that was great news for tennis in an Olympic spirit."

According to Roger, Olympics tennis will get the publicity it deserves at the London Games to be played in 2012, considering the fact that the event will be held at Wimbledon, the most iconic and prestigious tennis championship played in the world.
"In London, with the heritage we have for tennis through Wimbledon, it's probably going to be the biggest tennis Olympics we're going to have, “ Federer said. “It being in London will help the cause. We don't have to travel extra
thousands of miles to get to the venue as we travel enough. Before, you had some guys who did not like playing on grass at all so they would just skip it. But now it's different. Everybody today plays on grass. For raising awareness for tennis at the Olympic
Games, I think London is going to be the perfect place.”

Teamed up with compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in the year 2008 at the Beijing Olympics, Roger defeated the Swedish pair of Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson. The Swiss duo initiated the match with a 6-3 set and went on to win the second set 6-4. However, Johansson
and Aspelin came back to take the third set 7-6 (4). The deciding fourth set nevertheless went in favor of Federer/Wawrinka as they took it 6-3 to bag the Olympic gold medal.
