Tennis Update: The Mercury Insurance Open 2010- Coco Vandeweghe defeated Vera Zvonareva
The 2010 grass court Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva, was thrashed out by a young local tennis player Coco Vandeweghe in the round number two clash of the Mercury Insurance Open on Thursday. Coco won the match in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Vera did start off the match pretty well. However, the two hundred and five ranked tennis ace, Vandeweghe, recovered from a destructive start to shock the ninth ranked women tennis player, Vera Zvonareva in California.
The eighteen years old, Vandeweghe out classed her opponent in second as well as the third set of the match and thus registered her biggest victory so far of her short professional life.
"It feels great to knock down a player of such high status”, Vandeweghe said after the match. “Moreover another interesting thing is that Vera has been performing pretty well over the recent past and I am so glad that I still manage to defeat her”, Coco added.
Vandeweghe, made her way into the main draw after winning a total of three qualifying games and succeeded in her second straight clash after falling down on thirteen of her last fifteen career WTA encounters.
Zvonareva, the third seed player looked pretty confident after winning the set number one of the match. However, the way Coco came back in the match and went on to win the second as well as the third was simply stunning to watch.
"During the set number one of the match, I was actually feeling a lot of pressure and was very nervous as well”, Vandeweghe said. "As a result I didn’t play the way I had been playing over the mast few matches”, she added.
However, the teenage player afterwards did well to settle down, as the crowd also supported all throughout the match.
"I enjoy playing in front of a huge crowd, particularly it gives you a lot of confidence when they are backing you”, she said.
Vera on the other hand, while commenting on her defeat at the hands of young teenage player said, "In view, she didn’t shock me at all. I am aware of her style of game”, said an emotional Vera, who had tears in her eyes while talking to the reporters. "What actually surprised me in today’s match was in fact the way I played after winning the set number one quite comfortably. I started off nicely however didn’t use my mind afterwards as I played really stupid”, she added.
Vandeweghe with this victory has reached the quarterfinal round of the tournament, where she will meet Svetlana Kuznetsova, a Russian tennis ace. Svetlana confirmed her quarterfinal spot after knocking down an Italian tennis player, Sara Errani in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-1, 5-7 (5), 7-5.
On the other hand, Flavia Pennetta, a seeded number five player also won her match against her Russian opponent Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 7-6 (5). She has successfully managed to knock down Maria in their previous three clashes.
As a result of this victory, Flavia will face Samantha Stosur, an Australian tennis player in her next round match of the tournament in San Diego.
"I need to take some rest now and get myself fully prepared for my next round match with the Australian tennis ace, Samantha Stosur”, Pennetta said. "I really want to play well and win my match against Stosur”, she added.
In another round number two match, Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova thrashed out Zheng Jie from China in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1.
