Tennis Update: U.S. Open 2010- Venus Williams advances to Quarterfinals
No. 3 Venus Williams of United States defeated No. 16 Shahar Peer of Israel by 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a tougher than expected match at the U.S. Open 2010 on a Sunday afternoon.
Williams never looked as comfortable in any of her match as she was in this match. The match was really interesting, as Williams defeated her opponent on the second straight windy day in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Only 48 percent of her first serves were in, other than this she faced six break points and lost three. The American wasted five chances to wrap up the first set in a 22-point 12th game.
Peer surprisingly played nicely. She served nicely and handled Williams’ power, although she fell to 0-6 lifetime in the matchup and yet has to win a set. Serving to stay in the first set and trailing 6-5, Peer staved off five set points before finally winning a game that hardly took more than 12 minutes. However, Williams defeated her in the tiebreaker to finish an opening set that took 1 hour and 8 minutes.
"It's not new that I'm trying to win and fighting for every ball and hanging in there every point," Peer said. "But I do think it can give me more for the future, because every time I played Venus I had tough time and she was always kind of killing me every match."
As for the dress, Williams was wearing a red “daytime” version of the black, which she wore two nights previously. Most of the time during match, she spent tugging at it to keep it at barely high-thigh level.
"No," she said when asked if the dress bothered her. "The only thing that bothered me was when I didn't win the point, I think. That was it."
The American will be playing her next match against No.6 Francesca Schiavone, who defeated 20th seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova by 6-3, 6-0. The upcoming match will be a quarterfinal. Francesca Schiavone is one of the best players in the tournament and considered one of the best defender as well. Williams advances to the quarterfinals at the Open for the 10th time in 12 appearances and Peer is still need to win a set against Williams in six career matches.
There are still American women in the tournament, but William is the last back to back women’s champion, receiving the title in 2000 and 2001. 30-year-old player doesn’t focus on her age when it comes to outlasting younger opponents. She doesn’t even know how she feels, may be still young especially in the head.
Williams needs to put a lot of effort to defeat Anastasia, she needs to improve her game more after a match in which two –time champion looked more like someone who was trying to find her form, which she has missed after missing most of August with an injured kneecap.
"We always have had very competitive matches, so I know it's not going to be something I just walk through when I play against her," Williams said of the matchup against Peer. "I have to stay focused and ready to take every point or else she will. It was a good challenge."
Her top ranked sister, Serena Williams is not playing in the U.S. Open 2010 tournament due to a foot injury, was on hand for the second match in a row to watch her older sister play. However, William is not feeling pressurized with the absence of her sister and is giving her best throughout the tournament.
According to the experts, Venus Williams will be one of the finalists for the tournament and there are many chances that the history repeats itself and Williams wins the title. Her smashing service always wins the heart of the spectators. All her fans and all the people who love to see tennis are looking forward to the upcoming match and Williams’ performance in it. Hopefully, William will come up with good results and live up to the expectations of her fans.
