Tennis Update: Vera Zvonareva saves Russian victory over Europe.
The Russian tennis star world number two Vera Zvonareva scored in straight sets over the Denmark’s world number one Caroline Wozniacki defeating her 6-1 and 6-0 in the Gold Group of the tournament.
Woziniacki rose to the top ranking earlier in October 2010 and this weekend went glorious the same for her when she topped the bill at the Honk Kong Tennis Classic World Team Challenge.
The Hong Kong Tennis Classic exhibition tournament was held at Victoria Park when Team Europe went down at hand to Team Russia who defended their title with a 3-1 win.
Despite the score-card, Zvonareva and Wozniacki had always been tough competitors. After this defeat, Wozniacki told the press that she is now focusing on the first Grand Slam tournament of the upcoming season, the Australian Open, starting in Melbourne
from the 17th of this month.
With the Australian Open just around the corner, the Russian threw down the gauntlet with an awe-inspiring knock down of the European star, Wozniacki. The match stood just 56 minutes before the Russians were chanting with the victory.
Zvonaereva had the perfect season end and undoubtedly her career-best last year. She was immediately in action when she reacted on her opponent’s weak second server without any mistake and was quite overwhelmed taking the first set merely in 25 minutes.
Wozniacki, although has been quite consistent in her game, but made uncharacteristic errors after just one winner in the first set. Zvonareva further gained control of the game when the Denmark star dropped two quick service games.
"It was a great match and I played some good tennis," Zvonareva said of her mesmerizing performance, to cheers from the crowd at the Victoria Park stadium.
“It was my first two matches out here in Hong Kong to start the season and I'm definitely excited about it. And the way I played those two matches, I'm very happy, so hopefully I can keep the form and play some good tennis in Australia."
The Hong Kong exhibition ends today, which featured the three-player teams representing Europe, Russia, America and Asia Pacific. Team Russia finally takes home the title with their win in the last event, the mixed doubles, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-0.
