Tennis Update: Women’s Roger Cup will feature a brand new champion this year, Caroline Wozniacki- new hot favourite
With all the top seeds out of the championship, there will be a first time winner at the Rogers Cup Women tennis tournament this year in Montreal.
Vera Zvonareva toppled Kim Clijsters from Belgium in a three setter clash on Friday, kicking out the only player left who had earlier captured the Canadian Open trophy.
The Russian tennis ace won a total of ten out of her previous twelve games of the match for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at the Uniprix Stadium on Friday.
She will play her semi final battle along with Victoria Azarenka, Svetlana Kuznetsova as well as Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday.
Kim Clijsters, who captured the Roger Cup title back in 2005, was looking quite good since here Cincinnati victory last week. However, the Belgian due to her thigh injury during the second set of the match couldn’t play her natural game and as a result fell behind 5-0 in the last set.
Caroline Wozniacki, on the other hand looked highly inspiring while knocking down her sixth seeded opponent Francesca Schiavone later in a match on Friday to reach the semi final round, taking down the clay court French Open winner in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
The crafty Francesca pushed her opponent on certain occasions during her yesterday’s match however, eventually failed to tackle her aggressiveness, as the twenty year old kept Francesca unsettled with her pace and energy. Caroline's serve was broken just on a single occasion during the match where as she broke Francesca on a total of four occasions.
With the last year’s US Open winner, Kim Clijsters possibly injured and this year’s Australian Open as well as the Wimbledon champion Serena Williams out of the competition due to her foot surgery, Caroline Wozniacki has within no time appeared as the new hot favourite to win the title at the Flushing Meadows, who will be hopefully seeded number one in the competition.
Caroline will face Kuznetsova as her semi final opponent on Saturday, who reached the semi final round of the competition on the very first occasion in her career after comfortably ousting her Chinese opponent Zheng Jie in Montreal.
The veteran Russian contender got the better of Zheng Jie in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-1, 6-3. She won the opening set in just a total of twenty eight minutes and won nine of the opening ten games.
The Chinese tennis ace had kicked out Elena Dementieva earlier this week.
Caroline Wozniacki and Kuznetsova both share a total of two victories so far against each other in their career.
Caroline while commenting on her today’s semi final clash said, "I am totally aware of the fact that I have to play really well in order to win today’s match.”
In the second semi final match of the Rogers Cup Women tennis tournament, Vera Zvonareva will face the tenth ranked Victoria Azarenka from Belarus, who made her way into the semi final battle after thrashing out her French tennis opponent Marion Bartoli in a two setter quarterfinal battle. The final match score was 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Azarenka right from the start of her quarterfinal match dominated the game and won the opening set 6-2.
However, Marion Bartoli did come back by taking a lead of 6-2 in the tiebreaker during the second set of the match. Victoria afterwards won four straight set points to win a tiebreaker 8-6 and confirmed her place in the semi final round of the Rogers Cup Women tennis tournament 2010.
Azarenka stands at 2-4 in career head to head clashes against Vera Zvonareva, however, the Belarusian has triumphed in their previous two encounters, which were both on the hard surface this year.
