Tennis WTA Hansol Korea Open: Nadia Petrova advances while Dinara Safina crashes out in Korea
The former top ranked tennis player from the women’s side, Dinara Safina was bundled out of the WTA Hansol Korea Open tennis tournament in the quarter final round at the hands of Klara Zakopalova on Friday. Nadia Petrova in her today’s clash however survived
to battle for another day. Petrova is seeded number one to win the title in Korea.
The professional tennis player from Russia, Dinara Safina is on the return trail from a back injury and was participating here as a wild card entrant, however, her championship campaign ended when she was hammered down by her Czech tennis foe Klara Zakopalovain
in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-5, 6-3.
Nadia played better, making her way into the semi-final round of the competition with a two-setter clash against Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1. The clash concluded in a time period of sixty one minutes on Friday.
The Moscow-born Nadia has so far captured a total of twenty seven WTA trophies, nine in singles and eighteen doubles crown in her professional life. In singles, the 28-year-old Nadia has achieved a career high ranking of world number three back in 2006 during
the month of May and has successfully made her way into the semi-final round of French Open back on 2003 as well as 2005. In doubles, the Russian tennis player has triumphed in the season ending Sony Ericsson tournament back in 2004, teaming up with Meghann
Shaughnessy. The right-hander is currently ranked number nineteen in the world by the Women Tennis Association.
At the year’s final Grand Slam, Petrova despite being ranked as low as number nineteen in the world was seeded number seventeen to win the title. She, however, couldn’t even win her opening round clash as the Russian was brushed aside by Andrea Petkovic
in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2–6, 6–4, 6–7(4). In the doubles, Petrova performed really well as she along with Liezel Huber, recorded her best run in a major event by making her way into the finals, where the duo was eventually thrashed
out by Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(4).
In some other action at the Korea Open, the fifth seeded Alisa Kleybanova also did well to defeat her Russian tennis foe, Ekaterina Makarova in a total of two sets on Friday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-2.
Last year’s Japanese winner Kimiko Date Krumm in her match, however, was defeated by Agnes Szavay in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 6-2, 6-7 (3/7,) 6-3.
