  1. you are hitting yourself because you are making contact with the ball behind your body, and your elbow possibly ends up stuck to your body as you adjust.

It is optimum to do the follow through over the shoulder so that the ball goes deep easier.. and it is also better to catch the racket with the other hand....  but, that would solve the whacking yourself problem, but would not really improve your stroke...

....So, 1)Hit the ball while it is still in front of you...

               2) Don't have your elbow stuck to your body as you hit..

               3) Follow-through above your shoulder..

...oh... don't forget to bend your knees.. hehe

  2. The only thing I can think of is to really try to catch the racket in your left hand before it hits your shoulder. Try and hit up more so you're not coming across so hard and hitting yourself.

  3. Swing over the shoulder.

Even if you do have a windshield wiper stroke, the racquet should not be colliding with your left shoulder. Ask an instructor to point out some mistakes with your followthrough. In the meantime, use an over the shoulder follow through.
