The name which put India on the tennis map, Sania Mirza, has turned 24 today, on 15th November, 2010. The professional tennis star from India who made her debut on the WTA World tour back in 2003 is currently ranked number 111 in the South African
Airways WTA list.
Having started playing tennis at six, Mirza who turns 24 this Monday, is celebrating her first birthday with her husband, Shoaib Malik who is a former captain of the Pakistan Cricket team. Mirza tied the knot with Shoaib Malik on April 12 earlier this year
at a private ceremony in Hyderabad. The 24-year-old Mirza who wore a rose saree in her nikah became the second wife of Malik, who divorced his first wife just a few days prior to his second marriage.
The winner of Arjuna award, Mirza, is well known for her strong forehand ground strokes on the tour. She also captured the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles crown, pairing up with Alisa Kleybanova from Russia.
The right hander is the highest ranked female tennis contender ever from India, with a career high ranking of number twenty seven in the singles and eighteen in the doubles. Mirza is also the first Indian to be seeded in a major event. The Mumbai born registered
her name as the first female tennis player from her country to make her way into the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the United States Open in New York back in 2005, beating Marion Bartoli, Mashona Washington and Maria Elena Camerin on her way.
After capturing the mixed doubles event, teaming up with Mahesh Bhupathi, at the Australian Open last year, she became the first Indian woman to grab a Grand Slam trophy on the tour. Mirza is currently taking part in the Asian Games being held in China.
The hot looking Mirza, who made her debut in the Fed Cup team of India back in 2003 and triumphed in all three singles clashes, however, has no plans of high profile birthday celebrations on her special day.
