Tennis latest: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga announces his withdrawal from the Davis Cup final
The French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has announced his withdrawal from the final of this season’s Davis Cup versus Serbia as a result of his knee injury on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old Tsonga who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2004 is currently ranked number 13 in the South African Airways list. The top Frenchman was scheduled to take part in the final of the Davis Cup which will be contested next month in
Belgrade.
Tsonga suffered a knee injury after playing at Wimbledon back in June. The professional tennis player from France as a result of his injury also pulled out of the Olympus United States Open Series competitions namely the Rogers Cup in Toronto, the 2010 Western
& Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati along with the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York.
The 1.88 meters tall made a comeback on the tour last month for his trophy defence at the 2010 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis tournament as a third seeded player. However, due to his lengthy break, Tsonga was clearly rusty and out of touch. He played the Thailand
Open runner Jarkko Nieminen in the first round and expectedly lost it in three sets which also ended the trophy defence of the French player. The final score line was 4–6, 7–5, 1–6.
The former world number six Tsonga next played at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China last month as seeded number twelve to win the title. The Gingins resident got the better of Feliciano Lopez in his opening round match in two sets. The final match score
was 7–6(4), 6–3. He next surpassed Sam Querrey from the United States of America in straight sets with a score line of 7–6(7), 6–1. The right hander made his way into the quarter final round in China after brushing aside Florian Mayer 7–5, 6–3.In the final
eight round, Tsonga at last was crushed at the hands of number one Brit, Andy Murray in straight sets.
"My tendon snapped once again in Montpellier," Tsonga told the reporters in a press conference on Wednesday.
He added that he will skip the remainder of the year and thus also pulled out of the Davis Cup final in Belgrade.
