Tennis latest; Robin Soderling reaches his career high ranking of number four
The 26-year-old Robin Soderling from Sweden is ranked number four in the world according to the new South African Airways ATP list released on Monday.
The Monte Carlo resident who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2001was previously ranked number five in the world. Soderling has so far reached a total of two Grand Slam finals in his career, the French Open back in 2009 and this year, falling
to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal respectively.
The owner of six singles ATP titles is famous for his competitive drive and powerful game on the tour. His game is regarded as one of the brutal ones combined with his heavy and precise serve.
The professional tennis ace from Sweden also has a very good return game. His double-handed backhand is strong and dependable, whereas, the forehand is considered as one of the most deadly weapons in the modern day game. Majority of his success has come
on fast courts in spite of the fact that his best major results have occurred at Roland Garros. However, this is thought to be due to the heavy conditions and slowness of the clay surface which gives the Swede some more time to set up his powerful shots.
Soderling achieved his career high ranking of world number four in the South African Airways ATP list by virtue of his title victory at the 2010 BNP Paribas Masters Men’s singles tournament in Bercy.
The right hander travelled all the way to Paris after his semi final appearance in Valencia. Having received a first round bye at the BNP Paribas Masters, Soderling got the better of Gilles Simon in two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-0.
Second up was Stanislas Wawrinka who was also ousted by the Swede with a score line of 7-6(3), 6-3. In the quarters, he did well to triumph against Andy Roddick from the United States of America in two sets. The final match score was 7-5, 6-4.
World number four then prevented three match points in his semi-final victory against Michael Llodra to advance into his first Masters 1000 title battle and eventually won the tournament by beating Gael Monfils in straight sets. The final match score was
6-1, 7-6(1).
The 1.93 meters tall, as a result of this victory, also registered his name as the first Swede to capture a title in Bercy since Thomas Enqvist back in 1996.
With the win, he also ensured a career high ranking of world number four by overtaking the top ranked Brit, Andy Murray on the tour.
