Tennis news: 2010 U.S Open champ Rafael Nadal makes history by grabbing all Grand Slam titles
The Spaniard tennis player, Rafael Nadal has won the 2010 United States Open title after beating Novak Djokovic in a total of four sets in New York. The final match score was 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Rafa's first United States Open win takes him to nine major titles. The 24-year-old Spaniard has registered his name as the seventh player in history to complete the set of Grand Slam titles- Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S Open.
He joins Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Fred Perry, Don Budge as well as Roy Emerson in having swept the board and also becomes the very first player since Laver in 1969 to capture the U.S Open, Wimbledon as well as the French Open in a single season.
Nadal after the victory said, “It is more than I actually dreamt off.  The overall experience to play here and reach the finals has been really great. Holding this trophy in my hands is a feeling that I cannot explain in words. It is simply unbelievable for me."
Neither the blustery conditions at the Flushing Meadows nor the powerful game of the Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic could halt Rafa’s relentless march to the only-trophy that still eluded the Spaniard.
Djokovic’s chances for winning the U.S Open title this season in New York were no less than the world number one Nadal, as he made his way into the finals after outlasting the five-time U.S Open winner Roger Federer in a sizzling semi-final battle in straight sets. However, the top-ranked Nadal proved to be too strong for the Serbian in the end.
As the play resumed on Monday after the rain interruptions on Sunday, Novak didn’t start off well and dropped the opening serve straight away. However, few uncharacteristic errors from Rafa afterwards allowed the Serbian to tie the match in the fourth game, but the 24-year-old Nadal regained the break quickly in a dramatic fifth game in New York.
The world number one took full advantage of his opponent’s weaknesses on the court and made well use of his serve that allowed him to dominate throughout the tournament.
Nadal after grabbing the U.S Open title in the city of New York said, “I think on the very first occasion in my career, I have played a superb match in this championship. That is my personal feeling and I am glad that I performed at my very best at the time when it was needed the most.”
