Tennis news: Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva advance to U.S. Open semi-finals
Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki and No. 7 Vera Zvonareva reached U.S. Open semi-finals on Wednesday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Wozniacki reached semi-finals after defeating Dominika Cibulkova by 6-2, 7-5, a match watched by American business magnate, socialite, author and television personality Donald John Trump from Wozniacki player-guest box instead of his usual suite.
"He called my agent and asked if there was going to be a space in my box," Wozniacki said. "I said, 'Of course, there's always a place for Mr. Trump.”
According to Donald, Caroline Wozniacki has learned one thing about making it big in the Big Apple.
Dominika Cibulkova made 43 unforced errors during the night of big event, which unfortunately resulted in Wozniacki’s victory. The Dane gets more balls back than anyone on tour these days. Her first five opponents have approximately made 33 unforced errors.
"It felt like we were playing in a hurricane or something," Wozniacki said. "But it was the same for both players. I'm happy to get through."
During the second set, the generally calm Wozniacki got into an extended discussion with the chair umpire Anthony Nimmons over a ruling that a point should be replayed. Wozniacki’s return on the Cibulkova’s serve landed near the baseline; Cibulkova’s subsequent forehand went out. Although the line judge called Wozniacki’s return out before correcting the call.
The chair umpire decided that changed call affected Cibulkova. Wozniacki approached the chairperson and asked that how could he replay the point and he replied in my eyes and she was stopped making progress by him.
To which Wozniacki responded, "You've got to be kidding me," a phrase she would repeat as the argument continued.
Eventually the point was replayed and Wozniacki won the match.
The Danish player is considered one of the best players due to her defensive abilities, and also noted as a defensive counter-puncher. In her recent matches, she won many points forcing opponent errors and running down so many balls.
Her speedy movements and athleticism allowed her to retrieve most balls hit by her opponent. The top-seeded played an aggressive game and controlled many of the points.
The upcoming match is going to be really big event for Wozniacki, until now she has proved herself as the best seed for the U.S. Open.  It is to be seen that will she be able to justify with her top-seeding in the semi-finals as well.
Wozniacki will play her semi-finals on Friday against No. 7 Vera Zvonareva, a 6-3, 7-5 winner over No. 31 Kaia Kanepi.
The 31st seeded Kanepi strived on a gusty afternoon in Arthur Ashe Stadium. She hit only 18 winners to go with her 60 unforced errors.
"The weather was definitely not for the good tennis out there," Zvonareva said. "But no matter what match had to be played; we were both trying our best."
The tone for the match was set early, when the two professional tennis players exchanged service breaks right away to make it 1-1, and they made 12 unforced errors and one winner through the first two games.
After the game Kanepi said that she 50-50 blames wind and her play, due to which she lost the match in the end. She added that although the match is over but she has learnt a lot from the recent match, usually she learns from every match, when she was asked about her last year’s performance.
The first women’s semi-final was set up on Tuesday, when a pair of two time winners at U.S. Open, No. 2 Kim Clijsters and No. 3 Venus Williams, each won the match.
The semi-finals are going to be a really fun for all the spectators and those who love to watch tennis. It’s still a question that who will pass through the semi-finals and live up to the expectations of the tennis fans. According to experts there are more chances of Caroline Wozniacki to win the match, but it’s hard to make any judgment before the match because No.7 Vera Zvonareva is also in her full form.
